DOUBLE BURGLARY IN TIMARU.

, ■*•■— T" When, a few days ago, the news was published that a burglar entered a dwelling house at Dunedin, to steal from the owner's trousers the keys of bis office, and then went into town and getting into the offioe robbed the safe of a considerable sum of mo.ey, many people looked upon the story with suspioion, it seemed suoh a bold thing to do. The same trick was, however,, played here m Timarn on Thursday night, fortunately with only trifling loss, so far as is known, to the dopredator's viotims. Some time daring the night a burg* lar entered the house of Mr T Tbomßon.drapor, by prizing up the drawing room window, by some oversight left unla'.obed ; went from I that room into one m whioh Mr Thornton and I the old gentleman, his father, slept ; caught up their olothes and carried them into the drawing room, and from the pockets of Mr Thomson, senior, abstracted a purse containing a little silver, and from tbe trousers of Mr Thomson, junior, the keysof the offioe and safe. The key of the outer door had besn left where jan assistant oould get it. . Mr Thomson, junr, heard some noite duriog the night, but I as his father is a light sleeper and sometimes restless be took no notice of it. In the morning he observed that tho bedroom door wae open, and that the olothes were somehow different, but he put bn a working suit as i usual and did not pay any attention to tbe 1 disarrangement-, and it waa not till his attention was oalled to other circumstances that he recognised that a burglary had beon committed, and his keys abstracted. On reaching the shop there were numerous signs that an entry had been . effeoted. The front is protected by roller blinds, and some openings m these were stuffed with sdme draper.v. material. Trails of candle grease lay on the floor, to and fro. There was not muoh missing, two or three blankets, some shirts and rug straps, aro all that are known, The safe was opened, was relooked acd the key has not been found. Fortunately Mr i Thomson banked early on Thursday, B*o that ' I there was but two or three pounds m oash m I the safe. Mr Bawetarn was sent for t. try | and make a key to fit tbe safe, and suooeeded m opening it, when it was found that | the oash, between two and three pounds I m silver, had been taken. The burglar or burglars then, or Booner, direoted attention to Mr Bowie's grocery etore, and after breaking a padlock on an outermost doer, somehow opened without damaging the back door proper of tho shop. This door was found fattened m the morning. Tho only thing missed is a small oash box containing some coppers. There wore tracks of candlegrease about the floor, and about the safe, but the strong-box does not appear to have been tampered with. There were plenty of valuable moveables m view, but these do not eppear to have been disturbed. The police were of. course communicated with, but last night had not succeeded m obtaining a olue to the culprits. __________________________________ : ' Xi ~
