TALMAGE ON EVOLUTION.
The Sydney Presbyterian has fallen foul ; of the gen«»tioaal American preacher, and j belabours him m tbe following fashion :— " The next time Dr Talmage lectures on ' Big Blunders 'he should note the blunder of the man who talk* on something he knows nothing about. It may be safely affirmed that the good Doctor knows as much about evolution as evolution knows about him. The subject of evolution requires for its investigation thought, reason, logio, soiealifio acumen ; but these are just the elements that have not yet been developed m tbe cranium of the Yankee orator. Tbe doctor » a rhetorician, pu^e and simple, with un abnormally exuberant verbosity, plenty of go and ga», but reasoning power is as yet a latent faculty. When we want a hat we go to a batter. We oonsult our tailor when sartorially disposed: The undertaker usually gets our order for oar ooffin j the Chinaman for a pumpkin. We don't go to fche bootmaker when we want to get cured of the ineasler, nor do we trouble the chemist to mend the shafts of our buggy When we want law we go to a lawyer, and when we waut to know ail about evolution we go lo a scientist, and not to Dr Talmage, who is as capable of supplying ut with the information as an oyster is of telling us about the habits of a kangaroo."
