There is tho immediate prospect, therefore, of a coQsiderhble increase m the demand for silver, which one would think must of necessity enhance ils prioe, and this oannot happen without putting a different complexion on trade m various parts of the world. '■he total length of the railways of the United t-tate*, according to the report of the Commission, is 176,600 miles. Including all side track*, and the like, it it 250.000 miles. Uniy 10,000 miles of line are donble. The railways give employment to 873,000 people, equal to 515 men per 100 miles of line open.
