WINCHESTER.

(Fbom oitb own uobbespondbnt ) The Waihi Football Club held their annual social m the "Winchester Public Hall on Friday evening, 15th instant. Between 30 and 40 couples were present. The hall was tastefully deoorated with various kinds of evergreens, while two wreaths, suspended the entire length of the building, and relieved by Chineee lanterns, added greatly to the beauty of the decorations. First class refreshments prepared by several ladies of the township were presided o?er by Mesdames H. E. Smith, and Moore, assisted at times by others, and it is needless to say that full justioe waß done to i the good things provided iof the inner man. ] The musio supplied by Messrs H.. Colville and Levens was much appreciated, aB was evident by tho number who joined m the dancing and the hearty manner m which it was done. Mr T. Hart as usual made a most efficient M.O. Songs were given at intervals by Messrs A. Opie, H. Opie, A. Hart, and H. Oolville. The gathering, which ended at half past 4 a m., was the most successful the club have yet had. Everything passed off well and those present expressed themselves as well pleased with the evening's enjoyment. Tho Waihi Club on the whole have had a successful season. At the commencement thoy suffered two defeats and played a draw, whioh prevented them from ocoupying the premier position m South Canterbury this year. Since then, however, they have won every match they have played, and at present are acknowledged to be the best team m South Canterbury. Your issue of the 16th inst. contains the names of South Canterbury players selected to play against North Otago next Thursday. Much dissatiffaction is felt over the ohoioe. It is only reaionable to suppose that when no trial practice is held the strongest club should be best represented. Instead of that the Union have six men and one emergency, while Waihi have five. Gaffaney (a Union player), has, as far as I can ascertain, only played m one first fifteen match this year, and ifc it not right that he should be preferred to men who have played well throughout the season. A. Austin (Timaru), Upton (Ashburton), and 0. Opie (Waihi) should certainly (on the strength of form displayed m matches this season) have a place m the team. There is no reason why the above-mentioned players should have been exoluded from next Thursday's match unless they were unable to play on that occasion.
