Writing on Deo. 18th of the Waterford ■election then pending, a London correspondent says : — All parties seem agreed that grave doubts upon the fltnesa of Irishmen for repreaontative institutions have been raised by the events of the last few day*. 'The Freeman's Journal writes :-— " It is now olmOßt impoaeiblo to address a meeting iv Ireland without nn attempt being made by hired cornor boys to bludgeon and intimidate tho membors of Parliament who attend. Now wo have once more a contest pending between the rival sections of tho Irish party, usbored m by a fierco and brutal attack on Mr Davitt, while yesterday a deliberate attempt to assault Mr John Dillon and his friends was tnada at Ennis. Who is responsible for this new polioy of outrage, and what iia itß -objeot ? We 6ay, without hesitation, that Ub object is to discredit and •destroy the national cause." Mr Dillon, speaking at Waterford, aaid that during the past 12 months they bad seen only too pain fully the results of tho division m their ranks.
