Tho decision wris written out at longth, oni was paaoed round for tho councillors to 100 ovor. The decision was published by th Prasa of the colony several days ago. thb geoec+b street sewee. The seoretary to the Railway Commis eioners wrote, by direction, expressing thei regret that after careful consideration the; oould not see their way to comply with tht council's request for assistance m remedyinj the nuisance complained of. Following the reading of this letter, it wai pointed out that three bodies were interested m this matter—the Council, the Havboui Board and the RailwayCommißsioners, and it an irregular discussion which took place correspondence and a report got on the inattei m 1886 were referred to'; also the extensior of the borough boundary to take m the sewer i the liability 'of tbo Harbour Board m thii matter, and the serious thing it meant if the work were to be dove out of rates. (Th< estimated cost is £300.) In the diacussior the propo.nl was mado by Councillor Hill 'that, seeing the public urinal, etc., was the main cause of the nuisance arising from the sewer, the Council give the Railway Com mi.Bionors notice that tho water supply wil be cut off. At this stnge Councillor Gibson moved — " That tbo foreman of works be instructed tc prepare a list of the timber required fen extending the George street newer, three and a half chains, the timber to be heart of totara, I aud tenders be culled for the supply of same ; tenders to be m by next ordinary meeting oi the council." He also advocated increasing the cost of water to the railway and contended that it was not right for the ratepayers to make a sacrifice by paying incressod rates for water when the railway got it at a low rate, and were not ratepayers. The council ahould do nothing until they got the borough boundary extended, and ho said it wob a scandalous shame that there should be thia obstruction. The motion was lost, Councillors Gibson, Fall-Jones, and Sherratt only voting for it, tho rest against it. It may bo noted as important that the mayor advocated not extending the sower.
