TIDAL WAVE AT DUNEDIN.

(Br Teleg-eaph.) DUNEDIN, Jo? 7B 8. Considerable alarm was caused on the flat to-day by an extraordinary high. fide and sea at Ocean Beach, and m the afternoon it became evident that a breach would be made m the eandhills at St. Kilda road, close to the central battery. At 4.30 tho sea had cut a channel through, and there was a strong stream flowing up St. Kilda road for about «00 yards, which spread on to the low-lying ground. This being tha first experience of the kind many of the inhabitants prepared to leave their houses. As the chancel was cut through within a short time of high water nothing serious happened, nnd steps were at onoe taken lo dam back the water for next tide by filling up the channel, and placing bags full of sand as a protection. At St. Clair the remaining portion of the sea wall haa di3flppoar=d, and most of the'Jesphinade haa been washed away. Tho next high tide will probably see several sections of land awallowed up as there is nothing but a line of sandhills now rapidly being eaten away botween the ocean and St. Kilda. In South Dunedin and part, of Caversham, the resdenta and property-owners are considerably alarmed.
