DVICTORIAN STATE FORESTS.

A few months ago tha firjr- report of the Conservator of Forests (Wr Perrin) for the colony of Victoria wa3 issued, i'he report .*!ates that it ti almost impossible to obtain trained foresters either m England or m the colonies, the knowledge of English foresters being limited to small plantation?, with no knowledgn of the management of She vast indigenous forestß found m the colonies. Mr Perrin mentions that m the Indian service there are eighty conservators, with about 3000 in»s;rior officers ; and he recommends that a school of forestry be established at DooHe. co that young men may bo taught and trained fo become practical foresters. As showing what has already been accomplished m the raiding of young trees, it is mentioned that en the season of 1888 69 as many aa 155,000 Ire^s wera raised m the Macedon and Crea wick nurseries, and planted m various places, and 74.000 were distributed t& public bodies. .During the past seißon, 1890, 310,000 were distributed or planted. The total number of tiees raised m 1889-90 nt the various nurseries amounter! to 884,100. Of theae 210,000 were required for planting last aeaßon, and 624,000 were kept m stock for next season. The total distributed tc tb^ public and planted during the last tbree years amounted to 1,063X00. A favourable announcement m the report is to the effect that the revenue from forests bos been of a remunerative character. The receipts from &U sources, «*ceptiog those derived from grazing, amounted t0£16,202, theeipenditure £15,218 leaving a credit balance of nearly £1000.
