Samuel Gabriel or Gabriel Reid pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing from a hut at Geraldine on May 29th, a suit of clothes value £i, tho property of Charles Burnett. Tho prosecutor atated that ho met tho accused ono day last month and they camped together one night and agreed to seek work togethor. They went towards Geraldine and got one day's work. They were then by permission staying m a hut belonging to Mr Mackenzie. After the day's work tiioy wero ia Gernldine, and prisoner seemed determined to spend the few shillings ho had earned m drink, so ho told him if he did he would go no further with him. Prisoner then appcarod to have slipped away io tho hut, put off his old clothes nnd put on prorecutor's best spuro suit iucluding shirt and boots, leaving his old clothes tliero. Prisoner, or someone, wont to tho hut a day or two later and fetched tho old clothes away. Ho saw no moro of tho prisoner till Saturday, when be happened to see him m Timaru, wearing the stolon suit. Ho gave information to Constable Tarrant m the street, and that officer arrested the man. Tho prisoner, tho conetablo stated, when ho saw prosecutor speaking t > him at once made off, and he had a bit of a run aftor him. Prisoner elected to bo dealt with summarily, and said something m a confused way about tho clothos being lent to him. but prosecutor denied this- -it was not likely he would lend hia best suit. Tho Bench held tho chargo fully proved and sentenced the prisoner lo two month) with hard labour. Tho suit to bo returned to tho owner, (fho prisoner appoured m Court m old clothes lent by tho polico.)
