THE LATE MR JUSTICE KERFERD.
MELBOURNE, Jan. 2. Mr Justico Eerferd died on December Ist after a very brief illness. He was one of the oldest of Victorian politicians, having beon roturnod to Parliament as member for the Ovens m 1864. Ho continued to ropresent tho same district uninterruptedly until his elevation to tho Supreme Court Bench m 1885, a poriod of twenty-one years, which is longer than any othor member of Parliament hae ever sat for one district. His career as a politician was an eventful and execediugly successful one. Ho took a most activo part m tba struggle wbich occurred over tho tacking of the first protective tariff to the Appropriation Bill ; m tho Darling Grant controversy ; and m tho Reform agitation. In ono Ministry bo wns Premier and AttorneyGonoral ; m another he was [SolicitorGaneral ; m another Minister, of Railways, and 'in a. fourth he was Attorney-Qenoral. From the 28th of December, 1885, when he was appointed a Judge, ho attended to tbo duties of that position with tho utmost attention and assiduity. Mr Justico Hodges, who now holds a temporary position on the judicial Bench, will bo 'appointed to fill the vacancy caußed by tho death of Mr Kerferd.
