The Timaru Herald. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1889.

We hare received a copy of some iuterestinp Australasian Btwti.ities which were recently compiled l»y Mr Hiiytor, the eminent ututist of Victoria, lie i;ives the population of tho several culonies, nt the close of ISS?, 11s lollowa : — Victoria, l,o9o,StJ{> ; New South AVulcs, 1,085.740; Quecnshiud, ;irf7,4G3; South Australia, oIB,3'JS ; Western Australia, 12,137; Tasui-.iuia, 116,110 ; New Zouhind, 007,080. With regard to the recorded arrivals and departures by sea, the former predominated m the majority of the colonies. In South Australia the difference, against the colony was only 1111, the figures bcicif — arrivals, 12,<i07 ; (lopartures, 1'2,7H0. Iv Western Austrnlio the adverse balance was 1 1!l(i, the figures being — arrivals, 150S; departures, 271) I. In New Zealand the loss through emigration waa far larger, the balance agiiiust the colony being 0175. The iiti'ivalH wcif lo.tJOli, and the departures 12 2 , 7 S l . Victoria gained largely by immigration during the year. The arrivals were 10-,()'M, and the departures GO/JilO, the difference m favour of the colony thus being -U.SO3. The figures on the whole show that immigration, to Australasia is proceeding at a very slow price, considering tho advantages which these young and (sparsely peopled countries offer to new arrivals. The total arrivals were 218,8-0, and the departures 183,230. The accession of population by immigration was therefore (15, 5!)!'. It is certainly a very small coutrilxition from the teeming millions of tho olil world, where tho struj;!»lir for bare existence is constant and bitter, and where emigration is fully recognised as a natural and legitimate weans of relieving the evcr-incrcaning prcFsuie. Australasia ia not m favour with the emigrating clncaea of the United Kingdom. They prefer to try their fortunes either m the United States or m British North America. Tbe public debts of the several Australasian colonies afford plenty of food for reflection. In proportion to her population, New Zealand has imposed upon herself 11 very respectable burden. The principal figures given by Mr Ilayter are :—Victoria, £31,627,382 ; New Smith Wales, £41,100,111); Queensland, .C 25,810,9."0; South Australia, £]'.>,] 17,700 ; New Zealand, 1*10,225,537. New Zealand is therefore second on the list; but it must be remembered that, whereas tin; population of New South Wales m 1,085,710, that of New Zealand ia only 007, 350 ; and, again, the revenue of New South Wales is i:B,Bßti,3o'o, while the revenue of New Zealand m £'3,7!)1,583. Iv New South Wales the people are taxed to the ettont of i2,b - 81,)3'8:; ; and m New Zealand they nre taxed to the extent of C 2.200.000. Mr llnyter gires the death. rate iv the several colonies, per 1000 of tho population, as follows : — Victoria, 15 31; New South Wales, 1351 ; Queensland, 1 1UG ; South Australia. 11-83 ; Western Australia, 15iH ; Tasmania, 14--1 1 ; New Zealand, !M3. The taxation per head is : — Victoria, £2 li>a 2d; New South Wales, £2 10h 5d ; Queensland, iM 03 3d ; South Australia, i' 2Us (id ; Western Australia, L'l 5s Id; Tasmania, i' 2 His 3d; New Zcnland, £3 12s Bd. The average taxation over the whole of Australasia is £2 1553 Id per hend of the population. In the vnrious colonies tho national debt per hend is : -Victoria, £31 11s lOd; New South Walcß, t'lo 12rf Id; Queensland. .L'fili 13s lOd ; South Australia, i'GO 3s Id ; Western Australia, £30 5a 3d ; Tasmania, £30 0s lid; New Zculand, .COG Is 7d. We ahull givo only one other Bet of comparative figuren, namely, those showing the average produce per acre of wheat andoati m ]HSH. They are as follows ; — Victoria, 710 uuahclfl ; New South Wales, 1 7f! ; Queensland, -80; South Australia, 3 - 85 ; Western Australia, 10-50 ; Tasmania, 271)7 ; New Zealand, 2980. Oata : Victoria, 1 1 20 : New South Wales, 13-77 ; Queensland, 5-(is ; South Australia, I! 0 ; Western Australia, 2312; Tasmania, 2707; New Zealand, 29 89.
