THE CALLIOPE.
London, May 23. The Eight Hon. Mr Gosohen, speaking at Sheffield, referred m glowing terms to the splendid achievement [of Captain Kane, and the officers and men of H.M.S. Calliope m bringing that vessel safely out of the dangers of the recent hurricane at Samoa. The incident, said the Chancellor of the Exchequer, was a monument to the Bplendid seamanship, nerve, and! petrection, which were characteristic of. the British Navy. NEWFOUNDLAND. St. Johns (N. B.), K»y 22. The decision arrived at by Gvcat Britain not to interfere with French action m Newfoundland is creating intenae excitement here, and bloodshed is feared.
