TEMUKA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

♦ The Temuka Ca'eJonian Society held their first " Ingleside " gathering on Tuesday evening m the Volunteer Drill Shed. The shed was tastefully decorated with flags, evergreens, etc, and tho floor was m first-class order for dancinz. The amusements consisted of dancing and songs, with intervals for conversation and instrumental ransic. The attendance was large, between 200 and 300 persons being present. About 8 o'clock Mr A. 11. Clark, tho president, ascended the stago, and having welcomed those present, expressed a hope that they would thoroughly enjoy themselves, and that they would meet on many similar occasions m tho future. At a convenient opportunity after supper, the president presented the. trophies won ut the Boiing llay sports. Tn the course of his remarks hethanked the directors and working committee for their exertions, to which the success of the gathering was due. The prizes coneisted of a cairngorm handsomely mounted as a brooch, won by Mr James Campbell, for pipe music ; a nut glass inkstand, silver mounted, the gift of MesßM Or. and T. Young, for Highland daeger, given by Messrs Bower und Ferguson, nlso Sor Highland dancing. Thero having been a tio for thuao events, und tho winners having accepted money prizes, the trophieß would bo competed for at another gathering. Dancing was resumed and kept up till 2 o'clock when the president thanked the committee for the excellence of their arrangements, and all present joined m singing " Auld Lang Syne." In the course of the evening song* wero contributed by Mr Foster, the Misses Connelly and MoLeod, nnd Meßsis Smith, and SloCiiskill. Mr Lawson recited part of " Tarn o' Shunter," and Mr >\m gavo a comio Scotch readinj. Mrs Foster (piano) and Messrs Langridge (violin), Eaynor (flute), and J. Andrews (clarionet), played " My Dream" waltz m excellont atylo. The general danca music; was provided by Messrs Levenß and Gooilwillie, and tho society's piper, Mr Campbell, played several reels and schottisches with great spirit. Me.'ers Quinn, Allan, Henry Mogridge, and Lawson, acted as stewards, and Mr A. Bieset ns M.C. Amp!o refreshments were provided by Messrs Allan, Clark, Murray, Mof.eod, and Naughton. Mesdames Allan and McLeod, with several assistants, presided. A smoking and card room wns prepared for thoje who preferred that form of amusement, and everything was done that could add to tho general enjoyment of tbe evening.
