PURSUANT to the tents of " The Banks and Bankers' Aot Amendment Act, 1882," FRIDAY, the 3rd day of May, 1889, is hereby appointed a SPECIAL BANK HOLIDAY at tho offices of tho undermentioned Bankß m Timaru, The Union Bank of Australia, Limited, Josbph Palmbb, Chief Officer for New Zealand. TAKE NOTICE that m pursuance of tho powers vested m it by " The Counties Act, 1886," the County Council of the County of Geraldine at a special meeting held on the 17th day of April, 1889, passed a resolution to the effect that the By-Law No. 3, called the Water Races By- Law made by the said Council, under the said Act on tho 18th day of July, 1887, and which came into force m the County of Geraldine on the 15th day of August, 1887, be repealed ; and further take notice that at the aforesaid special meeting the said Council passed a further resolution to the effect that, By-Laws applicable to the whole of the system of water works under tho control of the Council, and to the wlftle County of Geraldine should be made, and that the said By-Laws should come into operation on the 15th day of June, 1889. The following are the objects and purport of the said By-Laws : — 1. Providing for tho proper repair of and the keeping of water races free from obstructions, and for the construction and maintenance of field crossings, fences and hedges, by the occupiers of land through which a race or water channel shall pass. 2. Providing for an annual charge (to be fixed by resolution of the Council) to bo paid to the Council by occupiers of land abutting upon or adjacent to any aqueduct, raco or water channel, the water from which they shall havo obtained liberty to use, and as to tho application thereof. 3. Preventing the obstruction of water rnces either by placing or allowing obstructions to remain therein, or allowing bushes or plant* to grow so as to obstruct the fame. 4. Preventing injuries to wator races or anything appertaining thereto. 5. Preventing the driving of vehicles or the conveyance of any material or machinery across water races except at tho appointed crossings. 6. Preventing the pollution of water m tho races. 7. Punishing Persons for interfering with dams, reservoirs, headworka, buildings or any other thing appertaining to or usod m connection with waler races except by permission of tho Council. 8. Preventing bathing m reservoirs or other parts of wator races. 9. Providing for tho protection of Rangers and othors m the Council's employ m connection with water races. 10. Preventing trespass on, or nuisances m m water races. 11. Proscribing termß and conditions upon which applications will be considered from Pcrsonß desirous of having a sorvico or branch raco for the use of their lands. 12. Providing for the construction of races, and as to the expenses thereof. And take Notice that the said Council proposes to confirm both tho above resolutions at a meeting of the Council to bo held on the 29th day of MAY next, at the Offico of the Council, and that a copy of the said proposed By-Laws is dopoaitod at the Council's Offico m Timaru, and will bo open for inspection by the public during office houra until tho said 29th Day of MAY next.
