THE GERMANS IN SAMOA.
BY TIILEGItAFH. AUCKLAND, Ai'BiL 2'J. The Stas correspondent al Apia writes stating that very disquieting rumours nro afloat to the effect that a large German force will arrive, tliere m v fortnight or three weeks to renew hostilities against Mataafa, and it is generally believed that despite the Conference Germany is determined to wreak a bloody revenge 'on Mataafa for the death of the officers and men at the close of last year. Mataafu is evidently on the alert, for tho warriors, who had returned to their homes m , Savaii, have been summoned m view of these, rumours. Tho non-withdrawal of the dcelaratiouof war by Germuny has a deep and ■ sinister significance. Ihe appointment o£ , Hcrr Ktubcl is regarded as an indication that Germany intends to resume tho high-handed and violent conduct which created such consternation some time ago. Only a small German force is left behind, and as the declnration of war against Mataafnhas not boon withdrawn, that chief might, if ho choße,mako matters very awkward for tho Germans here, and be strictly within his right as a belligerent. However, it is morally certain he will return good for evil, lhn total German force ia 70 marines and four officers.
