SUPREME COURT.
* (By Teleobapu.) NEW PLYMOUTH, ArniL 2fi. At the Supreme Court Albert Edward Nelson was charged with perjury. The case arose out. of a lease given by Petrie to McLaughlan, when Petrie and his mother swore the deed was not tho one Petrie signed. Mr Holmes, Clerk of the Court, m examination, said he had examined Petrie's signature under a magnifying glass and s»w that pencil marks h>id been m:idc. His Honor said he bad noticed it too. Lateb. The hearing of the perjury ease 3 was resumed today, and a number of witnesses were examined. The first eaao against Albert Edward Nelson, watchmaker, is for having, it is alleged, sworn falsely that a certain deed of lease was signed by one Martin Petrie, whereas, it is alleged, that it was not so signed but that tbo signature is a forgery. By a magnifying glass appliod m court to ihe deed it was discovered that certain. pencil tracings partly obliterated existed exactly on the spot where the signature is made. Tho further hearing of the case was adjourned till tomorrow. Ihe cases are expected to extend over several days. WANGANUI, Apuil26. At tho Supreme Court to-day Joseph Traynor and Georga Jnckson were sentenced to three years' penal fervitmle, and twelve months' bard labour, respectively, for forgery. John Digan, a youth of 17, who had been recommended to mercy on account of his youth, was sentenced to nine calendar months' with hard labour. John Hunter, with half-a-dozen aliases, who was found guilty of larceny, was remanded till to-morrow, to enable him to obtain papers as to h;3 previous character. James Neary pleaded guilty to a charge of horao stealing. James Rowlands pleaded guilty to a chargo of. houso breaking. The charge ugsinst Cbarles Lucas, of rape on a girl twelve years old, is now being heard.
