I • WAIMATE PUBLIC SCHOOL V. TIMARU PDBLIC SCHOOL. This match came off on the Public School ground on Saturday and resulted m a win for the homo team by two tries to love (one of tho tries being allowed under protest.) Timaru won tho toss, nnd Strong set tho ball m motion. After some give and take play, Irwin at last got the leather, and secured a first-rate try, but tho kick proved fruitless. From this to tho call of half time no other score resulted. In the second spell Waimato played up well, but just on tho call of timo Uirrd (for Timaru) from a scrum m front of the goal got tho Becond try, but it wns protested against on tho ground that Baxter - had his hand on tho ball jointly with tho Timaru boy. On appeal it was givon as a fair try, but to our mind this was nn error, and a maul should havo resulted. Tho place kick was again of no use. The victors played a good game, their passing being excellent, and throughout McKay, Thoreau, Shappere and Burd played an excellent game. For the visitors Kett, Ross, Gnitt, Strong and Baxter did yeoman Bervice. Ross especially played a magnificent full back game, collaring well nnd repeatedly saving a scoro against his eido by grassing McKay. Wuimato's main fault wns m not following up well, but on tbo wholo they ; playod a determined gnmo against odds, especially m regard to weight. Timaru showed up splendidly m passing, but m tho scrums both sides were exceedingly weak. The visitors were entortainoi nt a capital dinner and luncheon m tho Main School, being waited on by Mrs Grahame, bead mistress, 1 and a slaff of tho senior girls, and enjoyed ' themselves immensely. The umpirea were Messrs Blako (Wnimute), and MoNaught (Timnru), and wo would suggest to theße ' gentlemen that m case of another gatno being played, they should see that n referee is appointed. The Waimato boys returned homo by rail at 4.40 m tho afternoon, greatly 1 elated with the Saturday they had so pleasantly Bpent at Timaru.
