The meeting is to be held m Christchurch, and the nominations are among the best ever reoeived by the Club. Many people missed the Harbour Board's electric light on Jubilee night. The explanation of its absence is this. On Monday evening it was used to work by on the wharf. All went well for a little over two hours, and then the machine went out on " strike." All efforts to get it to work again failed. The machine is almost of an obsolete kind, and is fit for little else than the lumber room. 71io 3£ci7i(xiucclit Times o£ the lGtli inst. says :— Wo mentioned recently that Captain Sutter, of Timaru, who recently visited this district, was greatly pleased with it, and struck by the greatness of its natural resources. That his impression was a permanent one may bo gathered from the fact that ho Laß since expressed his determination to ,take up his residence hore on his return from a trip to the Old Country. The weather, which was fino tho greater part of yesterday, changed for the worse again m tho early evening, and last night was a bitter cold one, occasional heavy showers adding greatly to the unpleasantness of things generally. We have now had more than enough rain, and a long spoil of sunshiny weather would bo most acceptable by all residents of this district. In many places tho rain has done much harm, and m the neighbourhood of Pareora, for instance, it will take a very long time to repair damages. Tho B. and N.Z.M. and A. Co., of Dunedin, notify clients elsewhere that after the 30th inst. they discontinue receiving consignments of stock and produce, and with reference to this Mr Lachlan Maclean announces that, having formed a partnership with Mr James B. Reid, of Elderslie, the firm of Reid, Maclean and Co. will be prepared to receive consignments and carry on ft stock and station business m all its branches from and after July Ist next. As the principals have been so long and bo favourably known m commercial circles, north and south, the firm should meet with great luccess. Not a few people m South Canterbury will be pleased to hear that at Ihe May graduation ceremonial at Glasgow University Mr John Morrow Campbell, a son of Mr W. Campbell, of Timaru, received the degree of Batchelor of Science m tho Geological Department. He is the first pupil of the Timaru High School who has graduated. Besides being the school's prizeman m Physical Science m 1882 he received Mr Herbert Belfield's special prize for being the most popular boy m the Bchool. Every yetr now two or three old pupils will be receiving degrees of one kind or other. At the Resident Magistrates Court yeßterday His Worship the Mayor presided. A m»n charged with drunkenness was cautioned and discharged. Mary Foley, charged on remand with lunacy, was again brought up. Dr Hogg informed the Bench that she had benefited by being m the hospital, and he thought a further residence there would be beneficial to her. His Worship remanded the young woman for a week. George Hutchison, of Cave, was charged on remand with lunacy. Dr Hogg reporting that he had now recovered, he was ordered to be released from custody on payment of tho cost of his maintenance. The Court then rose. A football match was played at Temuka on Wednesday between the Invincible football club and a Temuka team. Tho game started at about ten o'clock and was played m two spells of 45 minutes each. The Temuka boys, or rather men, were eonßiderably heavier than tho Timaru boys. Temuka won the game by 4 points (a goal kicked from the field, and a disputed try) to nil. The Timaru boys played an excellent game. Percival, Wilson, and Turnbull for Timaru, and A. Franks, Morris, and W. Storey for Temuka, deserve special mention for the service they rendered to their respective sides. The decision of the umpires with regard to the disputed try was received very unfavourably by both players and spectators. Railway Refreshment Booms, Timaru. — D.
