TOWN & COUNTRY.

-♦ Mr John Jackson presided yesterday on the Magisterial bench, and dismissed with a caution four Jubilee inebriates. It is announced that the Tiraaru Public School will not re-open until after the midwinter holidays. The only event occurring m Qeraldino to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Her Majesty's reign, on the 21st instant, was the firing of a royal salute by tho Geraldine RiQo Volunteers, at half -past seven a.m., under command of Captain Pearpoint. Last evening there was a display of firoworks m tho park, and to-day tho youthful members of the Band of Hope, and thoso attending the Sunday School, will have a treat m the Oddfellows' Hall, and m the evening there will be an entertainment given by the Band of Hops children. A Mi 1 Gill met with a rather startling experionce, and had what many people think a miraculous escape from Budden death while travelling between Timaru and St. Andrew's on Monday night last. It appears that he left Timaru on horseback, and all wont well with him till reaching tho Pareora river. This he found flooded by the recent rains, but suspecting no danger he crossed tho northorn ford all right, and got safely on to the southern bridge On tho north approach to this it is said ho found no obstacle to traffic, and he, therefore, took his horse over tho bridge. All of a sudden his horso stepped off tho south end of tho bridge into vacancy, and dropping about

twelve feet, struck the bed of the river, and it is supposed broke its neck, for death was instantaneous, not ovon a strugglo of the smallest kind denoting that life had departed. Mr GHII wai shot from the saddle clear into the river, but managed to reach the bank safely. Inspection showed that about fourteen feet of the southern approach to tho bridge had been Bcourcd away, leaving an extremely dangerous chasm. .As the local bodies who havo control of this bridge aro to havo claims for damages made upon thorn, wo refrain from commenting on tho accident. Yesterday tho fords of the river wore much improved, and tho roadways to the south bridge securely closed to traffic, a light being placed near tho bridge as a further warning to travellers. The unfortunate horao still lies where it fell, right m tho Btream, and wo think tho least tho Levels Eoad Board can do is to take stops to have the carcase removed and buried without loss of time.
