THE CHILDREN'S TREAT.
As soon as the fountain ceremony was over the school children formed m procession, and headed by the Garrison Band, marched to the Public School ground. Here the Ladies' Committee had been most busy, and as soon as the procession arrived about three thousand children had an excellent lunch m the school rooms. The girls were provided food m a large room on the girls' side of the school, and the boys m another room on their side of the building. There were pilesof cakes, tarts, sandwiches, &c, and an unlimited supply of lollies. The Mayor and Mayoress, and Archdeacon Harper, assisted by tho Ladies' Committee superintended the arrangements and were ably seconded by Mrs Grahame( Head Mis tress), and Mr Wood (Head Master), as well as by a large number of young people. Tho ground being so sloppy there was no " scrambling," and many such games ns are usually indulged m at children's treats. Owing to the wretched weather the treat was not such a success as was expected, but still all of the children enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Skipping ropes were provided, and such games as " kiss-in-the-ring," " drop the handkerchief," etc., were indulged m. It is to be regretted that fine weather did not prevail, as the moat perfect arrangements had been made for the amusement of the youngsters. In face of the disadvantages, the children were dismissed to their homes at a very early hour. The Garrison Band braved the elements all the afternoon, and before they dispersed His Worship the Mayor thanked them most heartily for their generous conduct. He praised the music, and passed a special compliment to their talented bandmaster, Mr Sidney Wolf, R.A.M.
