MR CHATWOOD designed aDd erected at the Banking premises of Messrs Hardcastle, Cross & Co., Bolton, tho first Banker's Steel Strong Room m the World. One end of the room is occupied as a Bullion Treasury, which remains to this day the most complete, and far away the strongest, yet produced. In this Strong Rcm Mr Chatwood introduced a new principle of lighting and ventilation. Oho doora of the room are two inches thick of Chatwood's Patent Intersected Steel, and are m duplicate for use m alternate- months. In the centre of the Strong Room stands an Hydraulic Elevator, which carries the Books and Bullion up into the Bank Room, where it stands during the day as a bank fixture, at once useful and ornamental. The top of this Klovator is one ef Chatwood's Check Safes, which effectually closes all tho keyholes, and locks out even the persons having charge of the keys. In 1877 Mr Chatwood designed and erected for the Union Bank of Scotland, Glasgow, the largest Steel Strong Koom m the World, 50 feet long, fitted with three of his Patent Intersected Steel Doors and Grip Frames, and divided into three chambers by two double steel walls, with rolled girders between, m which double walls are fitted two of Chatwood's Dotible-sided Safety Doors, accessible from either side. Each chamber is lighted and ventilated by one of Ohatwood's Patent Ventilating Lamps, and fitted with interior Safes and Treasury. Tho floor of this Steel Room is protected by a network ef Chatwood's Patent Hydro-pneumatic Tubes, which, on being tampered with can be made to sound an alarm m Manager's Room and Police Office. One of Chatwood'B Patent Hydraulic Elovaters, lifts four tons of Books out of its Strong Room into Bank Room m Accountant's Department, and another one m Transfer Department liftß two tons. The top of this latter Elevator iB used to carry heavy stationery to top of building, and suspended tray at bottom serves to carry up and down customers' plate chests from and to plate room m basement.
