Young Wellington's sire, Old Wellington (imported), was a puro Clydesdale, counted one of the best horses imported into Canterbury. Young Wellington was first shown at Aehburton, as a yearling, taking first prize against five others. In 188* he was shown at Timaru and took first prize, beating five others. At the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Show, 1883, ho took first prize for thebest bred Clydesdale Stallion, first prize for All-aged Stallions, and the Champion Prize againisfc the field; at the Timaru Show in 1884 h» took first prize, and again in 1885 he took second prize.
