A general meeting of the members of the Geraldine County Anglers' Society will be held at the Wallingford Hotel, Temuka, tomorrow. Flags were hoisted at half-mast on the shipping m harbour and on many of the buildings m town yesterday out of respect for the memory of the late Captain Budd. The Presbytery of Timaru will meet m the Presbyterian Church, Geraldine, at half-past two o'clock this afternoon and at half-past six this evening a meeting of parishioners is to be held to be addressed by several ministers. A notorious character, by name John Bourke O'Brien, but commonly known as the Honourable John Bourke, was sentenced to three days imprisonment at Temuka yesterday, for having been drunk on Saturday evening. A public meeting of ratepayers will be held at the Levels Road Board office at eleven o'clock this morning to take into consideration an application to close the road running through part of the Claremont estate and also the road through Mr Clolland's property at the Brothers. At the Resident Magistrate's Court, Temuka, yesterday, Daniel Bryant was brought up charged with having stolen a waistcoat from Mr H. T. Clinch. On the application of the police, he was remanded till to-morrow, bail being allowed m two sureties of £10 each. K. F. Gray, Esq., J.P., was on the Bench. The Gazelle nnnouucea the appointment of Mr James Paul Swan to be Gaoler at Timaru, vice Mr Edmund Cotter, who has resigned. Mr Swan has been for ten years a warder m the Terrace Gaol at Wellington, and for most of that time chief warder. He previously served m the colonial forces. He has the reputation of being a very good officer. At the Resident Magistrate's Court, Geraldine, yesterday, before the Rev. Q. Barclay, H. W. Moore, and A. H. Brisco, Esqs., J.P.s, the only ease to be adjudicated upon was that of Anthony Metcalf, who was charged with assaulting Henry Collier, of Orari Flat, on the 9th October. The accused was remanded for eight days, bail being allowed. For many years it has been known that gold is to be found m the Mackenzie Country, but there has never been any thorough system of prospecting for the purpose of ascertaining if the precious metal could bo obtained m payablo quantities. Lately several specimens of quartz have been brought down to Foirlie Creek showing Tery fair indications of gold. To set all doubts at rest, a thorough search of the country ia about to be made by Mr W. Close and Mr E. Moore of Fairlie Greek. The former has had considerable experience m gold digging, and is thoroughly well up m the testing of minerals. The two men have made preparations for a three months' prospecting tour, and are taking with them all the necessary apparatus. Starling from Fairlie Creek they intend to proceed to Sherwood Downs, and from there, (skirting along the foot of the ranges, make their way to lake Tekapo, and thence to Mount Cook. The result of the prospecting tour will ho looked forward to with interest.
