OBITUARY.
Mr John Patoreon died on Thursday morning at his residence, Springfield, near Temuka, at tho ago of forty years. By his death South Canterbury has lost another representative of her oldest families. A native of tho colony, though comparatively a young man, Mr Paterson had long ■unobtrusively used his influenco for the welfare of tho whole district. His father, tho late Alexander Paterson, was ono of the pioneer settlers of !Nolson, ho having landed thero upwards of forty years ago. There soveral of his children, including him who has just died, were born. Twenty years ago Mr A. Paterson,(with his family, removed to South Canterbury, and for a time occupied a house m Timaru, on whoso site tho Old Bank Hotel now stands. Soon after coming south, Mr Patcrson took up a station m tho Mackenzio Country, and shortly afterwards acquired two farms m tho Temuka district, ono at Winchester, ono nearer Temuka town. Mr Alex. Paterson was also tho first sheop inspector for South Canterbury, and for somo years fulfilled the onerous duties attendant on that olfice with earnestness nnd success. At his death, somo fifteen years ago, his sons took charge of his estates. Mr Jame3 Paterson assuming the caro of tho Winchester farm, Mr John, that of tho Springfield estate. Since arriving at yeav3 of manhood, tho subject of this notice has always evinced a deep interest m tho welfare of tho district m which his lot was cast. Chiefly to him Tomuka is indebted for her splendid domain and park. Ho also worked hard and successfully on behalf of tho local Paßtoral and Agricultural Bocioty, and was sparing neither of timo nor money m aiding any enterprise likely to benefit tho neighbourhood. Personally, Mr John Pater son was a man whom to know was to esteem. Naturally of a retiring disposition, his name did not often come prominently before the public, but m tho circle of his intimate friends fow wero more highly appreciated or thoroughly loved than he. When any good was to be done, or any charity to bo bestowed, nono was moro ready to answer the call than John Paterson. His genial prcsenco and firm friendship will long bo missed m and around Temuka. Mr Patercon'a death was rather Budden. So late as Monday last ho was out, but ho was then suffering from a sovere cold caught somo days previously. The disorder rapidly assumed aßcrious phase, and about nine o'clock yesterday morning ho expired. The funeral will take placo on Monday next.
