ADDITIONS TO THE HOSPITAL.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE TIM ABU HERALD. Sir, — Will you permit mo as one who tendered for the prof-osed additions to the Timaru Hospital, to say that I experienced no difficulty m taking out the quantities ; it was simply tedious, as might be expected, seeing that the work will take seven months to execute. The plans showed the new part m red, and tho old part to be removed m preen. Does " Ratepayer " expect a section of a building that is to be removed, when m five minutes he can see the building itself? He might almost as well expect a detail showing where to hit a nail. As to tho clause re additions and alterations without extra charge, this, I should think, it to protect the board against unscrupulous contractors, who, if through an error the nails were not mrntioned m the specification for laying the floors, would endeavour to get them allowed for as an extra. Possibly had "Ratepayer" the carrying out of the roof as shown, it might collapse. Probably it would ; but m the hands of oven an apprentice, there can be no doubt as to its stability. Then, again, as to the ground floor joists, where does the extravagance come m, when, owing to tho height of the floor from the ground, it would cost 50 per cont more if sizo of joists were reduced, and concrete sleeper walls built to support them ? As to tho othor mattcra mentioned, I would Buggest to " Ratepayer " not to go beyond a four-roomed cottage, ns tins job is apparently beyond his capabilities. I am, &c, Contbactob. Timaru, July 27tb, 1886.
