MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.

Tho ordinary monthly meeting of tho Board was held m the Road Board Office, Peel Forest, on Friday, tho 16th inst. There were presont the Hon. J. B. A. Aciand (Chairman), Messrs Gr. J. Dennistoun, Thow, Tripp, and Mackay. CORBEBPOHBBNCB. The following correspondence was read and considered t— - - ■ From the C)hief Surreyor, Christchurch, returning, the plans of roads proposed to be desdt with under the Public Works Act duly certified to for'that purpose. From the Commisßioriei; of Crown Lands, Chrißtchuroh, forwarding a form- of amondod application for a grant of land oiy the Opihi river, near Fairlio Creek. The Chairman informed the Board that he had signed the application and returned it to the Land Office. .From tho (Jeraldine County Council forwarding a cheque for £133 J.9s 2d, being' a refund of 75 per cent upon subsidy of pates received from the general Government; From the Treasury, Wellington, informing the Board that the sum of £1G 11b 2d had i been forwarded to the credit of the Board, i being the amount of rates duo on Crown i lands. .:•'..'■ ? ,i -■■ From Mr J. H. Dean calling attention to the state of tho drain alongside the road near . Peel Forest, and requesting that the same be . cleaned out. i Tho overseer was instructed to havo tho work done. Hitch, m referonce to procuring a road line through part of: the Timaru Borough CounoiPs roserve to give access to his land. . . . ; Resolved—" That the Clerk write to the , Timaru Borough Council to say that the . lessee of the reserve is willing to meet tho ' Mount Peel Board m getting a road line to • Mr Hitch's land, by way of exchange of the \ present surveyed road for a more serviceable : line, and to ask if the Council will join with ! tholesseoand the Board m carrying out tho ' game." 1 ' . ' Mr Mackay brought before the J^oard . the ' desirability of erecting Btock. bridges; over the . south, branch of the, Opuna- river- /on . the OJayton road, arid over the Opihi at the head of the Totara Talleyi bo as 'to. open Jup a direct line for driving sheep frbm Sherwood Downs, (Dayton, and Macienjie Country to Timaru. After a lengthy discussion it was proposed by Mr Tripp, seconded by Mr Mackay, and parried— "That the petition of Mr Morris and others at Sherwood Downs for a bridge over the South Opuha river b.e sent to My W. Moody, of Timarn, referring him to section 8 , of the Public Works Act Amendment 18f)4,---i which enacts that the construction of bridges • shall belong to County Councils and not to i Road Boards." ' Proposed by Mr Maokay, and seconded by . Mr Tripp— "That the Mount Peel Road f Board agree to pay one-third of the cost of • erecting a bridge over the Opihi river, at the 1 head of tho Totara Talley ,road ; and one- ; half the cost of ft stock bridge over thejSouth,

branch of tho Opnha river, on the Clayton Toad, and to lengthen the bridge over the j Clayton rivor,- bo as to be 'available for] stock." . ■ An amendment was proposed by the Chair man, seconded by Mr Dennistoun, and carried — " That the resolution be referrod to the consideration of the new Board."'. SHSOEHANBOn-g. . • The overseer was instructed to attend to the fence between the reserve at Peel Forest and Mr Dennistoun's land j- to, repair the footbridge over-the creek near the pound, and to improve the ford over tho creek near the foot of Tripp's Pass. . Resolved—" That the annual mooting of the ratepayers be held on Saturday, the Ist May next, and that tho Returning Officer take tho necessary steps for tho election of a new: board m accordance with the Road Board's Act." : ACCOUNTS. !'■.< ■. ■ v After passing accounts, to the amount of £48 195, the Board adjourned.
