One .boat capsized, and Button reached the-second boat, which also 1 capsized. . . A search was, made all- along" the beach, and at nine o'clock threelbodics (male) were found. One is that of the engineer, and the others of two seamen, which were picked up three miles north of the wrfecfc.- ' "The vessel is lying with her starboard side to the beach, but_with a slight list to port. The seals breaking over her, but not heavily. The beach is all boulders, and a heavy eea is ; running iip. the coast. Search parties are proceeding north, .along the beach. The star* vivors are in such « weak state that they could: communicate' very little to Mr McDonald. Mr Trolove did everything possible for the snfferera. ■ ' ARRIVAL OB 1 THE CAPTAIN AND MEN AT BLENHEIM. ... .- Blbnhbim, April 12, 7.16 r pm. Traps bringing the occupants of the captain's boat arrived in town at 7 'SO. The captain was interviewed by reporters, but beyond giving the following particulars/ he declined to say anything abont the disaster. After leaving Wellington he said the Taiaroa had a strong N.W. wih4 to' Cape Campbell. At three o'clock the wind chopped round suddenly, and blew hard from the 5.8., with, thick rainy weather and ! ':heavy fog. After the ; vessel struck, the boats got away without difficulty, and every person was off the ship when the captain got into his' boat. There was a heavy swell on the beach, and the weather experienced on the journey, down to Wairau bar was very, cold and rough. . * ' ' A preliminary .enquiry will be held by the Collector of Customs, at 7.30, at which it is doubtful whether the reporters will be ad- ' nutted. There were only three females on board. • -..-.. the officers; crew, and cargo. Wbiunoton, April 12, 8 p.m. So far as is learnt, the following officers and • crew were on board the Taiaroa :— i • Captain Thomson ; chief officer, Mr Monkman $ second, Mr Powell ; chief engineer, Mr Dalrymple j second, MrG. Stratford ;"purser, Mr R. Spooner ; carpenter, Mr Webb j A.B.'s, Messrs J. Mackay, P. Hansen, R. McMillan, D. Williams (all single), Wm. McPhee and D. Hill (both married) ; lamptrimmers, Messrs R. Unwin/ ' R. Morrison, George MoDonough (all single), and J.Kane (married). There was also a boy, one fireman, an A.B , and two or three stewards, whose names have not been ascertained. ; The Taiaroa had on board the following cargo, taken in here :— SO sacks barley, transhipped from Wanganui by Hogan and Co.j 50 boxes soap, shipped by Kitchen and Sons ; 2 cases, by Thompson, Shannon and Co.; 1 case and a quantity of iron, by N.JS.S. Co. She also had a small quantity of cargo from Nelson. The Taiaroa was valued at about £15,000, but the insurances are not known. The Company it is understood has a very large risk themselves. The Taiaroa was fitted with, engines of. 600' h.p. indicated. , . The captain, crew and passengers saved will arrive here to-morrow.
