TIMARU HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.

1 1io sixth annual sports meeting of the Timaru lligh t-i-hool boys was held on the S.O. Amateur Athletic Club's grounds yesterday.

As the annual event come 9 round tlicsc meetings teem to become more popular, and hence the lengthy programme thut was gono through yesterday. Tho number of events was, wo believe, greater than at previous gatherings. The success of a meeting of this kinrl depends greatly upon the way tho arrangements are carried out. This year all the preliminaries were left entirely to the boys of the school, and wo aro pleased to say that everything from first to last went off without a hitch. Great credit is due to the boys who composed tho Committee of Management. The weather was rather overcast m the morning, and a cold wind wns blowing. The Hector of the School, Mr A. L. 11. Dawson, 11. A., was, as usual, very busy m making tho visitors as comfortable as possible, ii ml Mrs Dawson looked after the fair sex admirably. The attendance m tho morning was not very large, but m the afternoon there was a goodly number. The ladies, with their bright costumes, darting about hither and tliiiher made quite an animated eceno. Tho old boys mustered up m strong forco. The Garrison Band discoursed somo splendid music during the afternoon, which considerably livened the proceedings. Punctual to advertised time tho sports were commenced at 10.30 am. and continued till 5 p.m., with tho exception of half an hour for luncheon. The programme was a lengthy one. Mr F. Jones was the starter, Messrs Rees, Ford, and Sergeant-Major Jones were Judgos. The grounds wero m excellent order, and every facility was given for testing tho athletic powers of tho competitors. The principal race of tho day was tho Steeplochaso Raco, over sis flights of hurdles, which was won by Master Charles Bees, for which he was awarded a. handsome silver cup, presented by tho ladies ; Muster J. Ford came second after a good contest, 'i'he One-mile Walking Bace was cleverly won by Master J. Ford. This young man promises m time, to become a very good walker. The cups were presented after tho sport by Mrs Hallamore to Messrs Cotter, 0. fiees (two), J. Ford (two), W. Fussell, and G. Jones, who were each shouldered and carried up to the pavilion. A hearty voto of thanks to the ■South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club for the uso of tho ground was proposed by Mr Dawson and carried by acclamation. Cheers were given for tho ladies, tho Eeetor, and the several assistants at the sports. The following are tho results : — High Jump, for hoys under 12 — F. Sims, Oft lOin, 1 ; 11. Bailey and O. 100 Yards Running Race, for boya under 12— H. Bailey, 1 ; F. Sims, 2. Steeplechase Race, open to tho school only, for tho Ladies' Cup, over eight flights of hurdles 2ft !'in high. Twelve started. C. Rce.», 1; J. Ford, 2. Rces won by about 10 yards. Ho had to run very bird for it, as he only passed Ford on the west of tho course, and after that he was closely followed by
