The Merchant Shipping and "Underwriters' Association report the arrival of the Bengueln. from Auckland (December 3rd), Glentnore from Lyttelton (December 12th), Langstone from Wellington (December Bth), Wanganui from Napier (November 28tb). HOUSE OF COMMONS. In the House of Commons last night Mr Howard Vincent moved a resolution affirming the necessity for an increased capitation grant to the Volunteers of Great Britain. Mr Gladstone spoke m opposition to the resolution, stating he resented any increase m the Army Estimates. After considerable discussion a division was taken, when the motion was rejected by a narrow majority. Mr Campbell Bannerman, Secretary of State for War, informed the House that Her Majesty's Government considered the maintenance of the present large force m Egypt was an unfair Btrain on the Army, and proposed reducing the garrison to 8000 men during the current year.
