THE FASTEST PASSAGE TO NEW ZEALAND.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE TIMARU HERALD. Sir, — In justico to the favorite s.s. Arawa and her able commander, I would ask you as ', a favor to inßert tho enclosed cutting from tho Wellington papers referring to the passages of . that steamer, and also to those of the s.s. Aorangi. , I confess that I was surprised to hear that Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's crack boats' fastest passage had been beaten by the Aorangi, as it is now pretty generally known that the Arawa and her sister ship the Tainui are the two fastest steamers m the New Zealand trade. It seems, however, that when the Aorangi arrived here, too muoh was taken for granted about her passage, for when the log books of both steamers were overhauled at ', Wellington, the Arawa, I am glad to say, , came out of the scrutiny the victor, and that I not only for her celebrated passage of some . months ago, but also for the one just made to tho colony. I am, &c, H. Anderson. Dunedin, 10th March, 1886. , [We willingly insert our correspondent's letter, but cannot spare epaco for the onolosed correspondence and the lengthy footnoto of a 1 Wellington contemporary. — Ed. T.BJ]
