FATAL EXPLOSION ON BOARD THE MARIPOSA.

(By Telegraph.) Auckland, March 7. On tho up trip and as the mail steamer Mariposa cleared the bar at Honolulu on the 14th February, an explosion took place, and tho plates covering tho boiler tubes got displaced. This caused an escape of stoam and boiling water which blew the fire out of the furnace and scalded five mon. Two died (Richard Carrow, coal pusser and John Whitmarsh, passage worker), and the others wero seriously injured. Engineers Shannon and T. Hansen, two of tho latter, were gont to the Hospital, and ono is not expected to live. James Brown, a water tender, was strong enough to go on to San Francisco. At tho inquest the jury returned a verdict of accidental death, no negligence being attached to tho Cuptain or officers The Mariposa wont on to San Francisco with her remaining three boilers.
