1 A despatch from Calcutta dated January 4th says the Indian Government has introf dueed a tiil imposing a tax of two per cent on the incomes of professional men and of officials of all olasses who hitherto have been [ exempt from the income tax. The tax is imj posed m order to coyer a deficiency m tho Budget of £200,000 arising from the expenditure caused by military preparations when it " was thought there would be war with Russia.
