(B? Telegraph.) Auckland, Jan. 23. The Amateur Athletic Club and tho Waitemnta Bicycle Club sports were held m tho Domain to-day. 2000 persons were present. Tho sports included bicycle races and flat races. The results were— l2o yards handicap, H. Davey j 100 yardß race, Q-. Smart. Slilo championship bicycle race, J. A. Stewart 1, J. Felton 2 : J. Sclby fell, and his machine buckled. Stewart won easily. A. Buchanan won the milo maiden race, the two miles Club race, and tho five miles handicap. In the last named race Stewart ran, but could never head Buchanan. The champion retired on tho 19th round. H. W. Batger won tho | 2000 yards hurdle race, and J. K. Georgo the i-milo handicap foot race. A meeting of the Auckland policy-holders of the Government Insurance is to be held shortly to consider certain questions. Jan. 24. A fire broke out afc midnight m a threeetorey boarding-house, vacated a week ago, adjoining tho Pior Hotel, Albert street. The house was completely gutted. It was owned by Michael Gallagher, proprietor of the Pier Hotel, and was insured m the United for £1800. Jas. Webb, a fireman, fell from a ladder through pressure of water on tho hose and was considerably injured. Charle3 Boram was slightly burned on the shoulder and logs through his uniform catching fire. At an adjourned meeting yesterday of persons interested m the growth and manufacture of tobacco, it waa resolved that a limited company be formed to grow and manufacture tobacco m Hawkea Bay, with a capital of £30,000 m 10,000 shares of £3 each. A provisional directorate wa3 appointed, and it was resolved that when 3000 shares are taken up that the company bo registered. Mr A. Vollbracht was elected a provisional director. Wellington, Jan. 23. The case of Grubb v. the Evening News, an action for libel, which was to have been tried on Monday, has been settled by the defendants paying £200 damages. The Mararoa left San Francisco on Sunday last for Auckland, with the London mails for 31st December, which were a day late m reaching San Francisco. She will no doubt reach Auckland on her duo date, namely, Saturday, the 6th prox. A man named William Sherwin fell off the train on tho Hutt lino last night. Both collar bones and his left shoulder blado were broken, and he received a severe scalp wound and fracture at the base of tho skull. Admiral Tryon leaves for Lyttelton by the Hinemoa at two o'clock- to-morrow. Jan. 24. Mr Alexander James Willis, J.P., formerly of the Property Tax Department, and who for the last eight, months has been acting Private Secretary to the Cabinet, has been appointed Private Secretary to the Premier and the Cabinet, vice Mr Ebenezer Fox, deceased. Mr Willis was formorly assistant Provincial Secretary m Otago for many years. Greyjioutii, Jan. 24. St. Leon's circus and menagerie was attended by fifteen hundred people on the first night, tho takings being £250. It was full again last night. The Cobden bridge is now complete from bank to bank and free from all danger. Only the planking and forming the approaches remain to be done. This is the driest season probably experienced here for fifteen or sixteen years. AH the mines are idlo except those using tho Government races, which get the water supplied from tho Lakes. The crops throughout tho district are almost perished and there is no feed to apeak o£ for tho Btock. Further inland tho drought is much worse than on the coast line. ChEISTCHTJHCH, Jan. 23. The excursion train from Christchurch to Dunedln this morning took 327 passengers. This number will be augmented considerably afc wayside Btations. The Premier arrived from Wellington this morning, and went South after a very short Btay. Jan. 24. Mr Hubert has received a telegram that the Samoan chiefs will be unable to accept his invitation to visit Christchurch, as time will not permit of their coming south. The chess match by telegraph between Christchurch and Napier, which commenced on January 16th, was continued last night. Mr Willis, of Christchurch, has lost his game to Mr Biddle, of Napier. Dukbdiw, Jan. 23. About 200 passengers left m the excursion train for Christchurch. j Mr M. J. Mackenzie addressed his constituents at Palmorston last evening and received a vote of thanks and confidence. Mr Taylor, who arrived m the Margaret Galbraith, was a prominent player m the international football match m Scotland. Inveboabgill, Jan. 23. Arthur Hormann, aged 13 years, son of a settler near Invercargill, received a sunstroke three weeks ago. Ho was placed under medical treatment, but five day ago he became unconscious and died to-day.
