ISLAND BAY RACES.

[By Tkluuuafii.] Wellington, Jan. 22. The first day's racing under tho auspices of the Island Bay Racing Club were run at Island Bay to-day. The attendance was estimated at about 60J, among whom were Admiral Try on and the officers of H.M.S. Nelson, Sir George Whitmore, the lions. P. A. Buckley, J. A. Tolo and G. McLean. The following are the results : — Local Handicap, of 50 soys ; 1 mile. Ugly Buck 1 Pink 5.030 2 Lcoinist.i ... ... ... ... ... 3 Ugly Buck took tho lead, and was never headed, winning easily by two lengths. Dividend— £3 10s. Handicap Hubdles, of 75 soys ; one mile and a half, Mr J. Higgins' Secretary ... ... ... 1 Mr D. Kuthcrford's Masler Agnes ... 2 Mr J. Prosser's Kangaroo... 3 Macaroni, Faugh-u-bullagh, Claud and Loch Lomond also ran. Secretary won comfortably by about three lengths. Dividends— i' 3Pj and t'2 1O). When 100 yards from home, Nelson had tho race well m hand. Captnin Webster, under the whip, made a desperate rush, but wa3 unablo to get within a length of Nelson, Pearl a good third ; Leon fourth ; Administrator fifth ; the Pasha, Tasman, Lady Emma, Ugly Buck, and Salvago, m tlie order named. Time — 2min 40sce. Several private watches mado tho time 2min 30Jsec, and this is believed to be nearer the mark. Dividend — (£2 shares), £0 14s ; (£1 shares), £5 15s. Great delay took place at the starting posl, and there were fully a dozen false starts. When the horses were sent away, they were all over the field. Mi 33 Dargon, closely attended by Little Scrub, was the quickest away, and tho two led the field along the back stretch. Capsizo made an effort to catch tho leaders when near the road, but soon died away again. Entering the straight Little Scrub passed Miss Dargon, but Athol Daisy came with a brilliant dash, and, cutting down horso after horse, soon had the premier position, which eho maintained to the finish, beating Little Scrub by a length, who i:' '<!■■ turn was two lengths ahead of Miss .Dargon, Rumor fourth. Tho Selling Hack Race, of 15 soys, brought out a field of nine, Batemau (Into Hinau) winning rather easily. £0500 was put through the machine iuring tho day.
