GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly mooting of the Board was held on Tuesday in the Road Board Office, Geraldine. MEMBERS r-BESENT. Mr Wm. Upton Slack (Chairman), and Messrs F. R. Flatman, R. H. Postlethwaito, William Deßenzy and John Kelland. TBNDBBS. The following tenders wero opened and considered : — No. 174, 1000 yards of brokon metal at Gapes Valley — Grindell and Maloney, £275; W. Hoy ward, £225 ; P.Burke, £200 j R. Rae, £200 ; F. Dierck £105 16s 8d; A. Reid, £175 (accepted). No. 175, earthwork and shingling Hilton downs — Joseph Webb, £34 10s ; P. Burke, £34 ; M. Lawlor, £18 10s laccepted). COBBESTONDENCB. Tho following correspondence was read and considered : — From Mr W. J. Beattie and 15 ratepayers, drawing tho attention of tho Board to the groat annoyance the ratepayers of Kakahu and Hilton are subjected to by horses, pigs, and cattle wandering upon the roads, and requesting the Board to take steps to prevent the continuance of the said nuisance. After a liltlo discussion it was resolved — " That in responso to those persons signing the petition re trespass of cattlo on roads, the Board recognise the necessity of adopting some means to abate the nuisance complained of, and it is therefore resolved that applications be invited for -he post of ranger for the district, to be in by the next meeting of the Board ; the applicant to state what salary (if any) he will requiro per month iu addition to the driving fees." From the acting manager of tho Bank of New South Wales, enclosing fixed depo-it receipts fur £800 for twelve months and for £100 for three months. From the Secretary of tho Railway League, Christchurch, dated 22nd December, enclosing a copy of a resolution adupted at a meeting held on the 2 1st December, re representation on Committee. From Mr F. Brown and Mr Alex. Brown, respectfully requesting the Board to take immediate steps to keep tho roads at Belfield free from straying cattle. It was decided that v'r Brown be informed the Board have decided to invite applications for the post of Ranger for the district. From Mrs Cameron, Winchester, re payment of rates. From Mr H. H. Pitman, accepting on behalf of tho School Commissioner, Christchurch, the offer of the Geraldine Road Board of £7 per aero for two acres in Reserve 1191. Resolved — "That the Overseer take the first opportunity to have Mr Macdonald's bush road and the reserve of two acres in Reserve 1191 surveyed." From the Property Tax Commissioner, advising that he had on that day sent in to the Treasury a voucher for the payment to the Board of £187 10s, being an advance of 75 por cent on account of subsidy under the Local Bodies Finance Powers Act 1885, as por following statement : — Rates collected 1885-6, £891 Os 7d ; subsidy (a minimum, half-year), £500 ; less half, payable to County Council, £250; 75 por cent thereon, £187 10s. From Mr A. Campbell, informing the Board that the culvert crossing the road near his house is in a bad state, aud requesting the Board to attend to it or havo it removed altogether. Resolved — "That the Overseer havo tho drain widened on the north side of tho road." miscellaneous. Resolved — " That a letter be written to the Hon. Mr Rollcston, M.H.R., requesting him to uso his influence to get the reserves conveyed." '" That the thistles and flax be cut off the Swamp road near Mr Deßcnzy's." " That the Overseer prepare a specification of duties for tho Ranger." Mr D. Shaw had an interview with tho Board with reference to the damago done to his fence and paddock by fire, which was commenced by one of the employees of the Board. Kcsolvod — " That tho Overseer report upon the fonce and damage done to the paddock." Messrs J. Frude und R. Annan waited on the Board to explain how tho fire had originated at or near Cooper's Creek, which resulted in tho destruction of Mr Shaw's fence. Resolved — " That the men arrange with Mr Shaw re the damage done." The Overseer was instructed to rpport upon the road between Mr Button's farm and Mr Sherratt's farm ; also, to report upon tho gates on the road as to whether they are properly hung. Messrs Webb and Cormack applied to be allowed to hang gates— one on Tripp's road and one on Donkins' road. Resolved — " That permission be given for Tripp's road, but not on Donkins 1 road. overseeb's bepobt. Tho Overseer's report was read and considered, and the following resolutions passed thereon : — (1) Tho road in Mr McCutchi-on s application to bo done when the traffic demands it ; (2j Iho contract for maintenance of the Rangitata river bed road to stand over until after harvest ; (3) Overseer to write Mr Fitzgerald re the failures, in the plantations, of those trees that were put in to renew other dead trees, and inform him that the plantations aro not in a satisfactory Btate; (4) That the attention of tho Domain Board bo drawn to the nece'sity of removing tho rubbish and dead grass in the park, the same being dangerous during tho dry weather ; (5) That a case of fire grenades bo obtained, to bo in readiness in caao of firo ; (6) Stt-ps to be taken to have the road leading through Mr A. McDonald's bush abolished. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to tho amount of £278 Is 2d wero oxamincd and passed for payment, and tho Board then adjourned until tho second Tuesday in Fobruury.
