Boabd of Education.— The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board of Education is to bo held at 11.15 a.m. to-day, Satisfactory News.— On making enquiries yesterday afternoon wo were glad to learn that both Mr Lewis and Mr Lawrenßon were progressing favorably at the Hospital." The Weatheb. — News from various parts of the district is to -hand stating that Rteaoy rain fell during the greater part of Tuesday night and did a great deal of good to late crops and to pasture. A Colonial. — The local agent, Mr John Reilly, received notice on Tuesday that His Excellency the Governor had been pleased to issue letters of naturalisation to Charles Schroeder, a resident of this"district. Water Colors.- 1 - There are on view at Mr J. E. Beckiugham's furniture warehouse, two very nice water colored sketches by Mr Mcintosh, master of the Wai-iti school. Ono, we understand, has been disposed of, while tho other is also for sale. Intercolonial Weatheb Exchange — New Zealand : Fino weather, but gloomy j generally showery over the centre during the night ; winds southerly ; increased pressure, c.-peeially in the south. Australia : Very high pressure to the S.E. ; fine woather and moderate easterly winds j depression to the westward ; winds westerly and showery. Barometers : Iu New Zealand at Russell, 30.3; Wellington, 30.4; Bluff, 30.5. In Australia at Albany, 20 8; Hobart, 30.5; Portland, 30.3 ; Sydney, 30.3. Boating. — Says the Welliugton Press of January I lth: — "In tho annual match next month between representative crews of the Star Boating Club (Wellington) and Christchurch Rowing Club, to come off in Canterbury, the following members have been selected to pull for the former club : — A. S. Biss (bow), W. H. Field (No. 2), R. S. McGowan (No. 3), and J. Batger (stroke). This crew is composed of comparatively young oarsmen, who have not as yet been tried in any first-class eTent, but it is expected they will give a good account of themselves, and uphold tho honor of the Club. It is satisfactory to seo the junior members being allowed an opportunity of distinguishing themselves and proving their merit in an important contest." _ IKB Bbigades Competition — Teams representing the Ballarat City, Ballarat East, and South Dunedin Fire Brigades passod through Timaru yesterday afternoon by the up-express en route for Napier, where they are to take part in the Fire Brigades competition at the end of the month. The Dunedin, Naseby, and Timaru teams will go North on Saturday.' The teams havo been granted freo railway passes by the Government. Speaking of tho Ballarat" City Fire Brigade wo may mention that one of the team — Mr Curnow — is the schoolmaster who, it will be remembered, distinguished himself by saving the train which was conveying polico assistance from being wrecked by the Kolly gang, for which he received a reward of £1000 from the Victorian Government. I Small Bibds. — At the meeting of the Geraldine County Council yesterday the question of exterminating— if possible — tho hots of small birds that fly about this district once more cropped up, but after a slight discussion was again shelved. As Mr Moody tersely pointod out, it is of no use solitary individuals or bodies taking up the matter ; if the nuisance is to be effectively reduced or abated altogether, systematic action must be ' taken, and no man must omit to carry out aggressive measures simply becauso his neigh--1 bors on all sides are waging deadly war against the small birds. This would to a cortain extent nullify results ; wc therefore hope when the local bodies maturo their scheme all landowners, great and small, will pull together and do their best to mako it a success. WATER SorrLT. — The plan of the Seadown water supply district, as prepared by Messrs Meason and Marchant civil engineers [ to tho Geraldine County Council, can now bo seen at the Council's offices by any of the 1 ratepayers interested. It is gratifying to ■ learn that among the many landholders of the 1 district only two so far have proto.-ted against , the water being taken over tboir land. One of these is nfraid the watcrrace3 will scour ; should the river over overflow ; however, as 1 the engineers have assured tho Council that i their simple, but said to be remarkably 1 effective flood-gate, will reduce danger ! to a , minimum, no doubt the. farmer spoken of will reconsider his protest and take the water. \ That a good supply of water will prove of ■ great benefit oannot be denied, and in the near future we hope to see the Seadown one of the richest grain and grass producing districts in the colony. . \ Pabish Festival. — Wo are' sure it is quite unnecessary to remind the public generally 1 that to-day is to be held St. Mary's annual parish festival. The spot chosen to hold the 1 festival on— the Maori Reserre, Maori Hillwill most nndoubtodly commend itself to all. , It is pleasantly situated, and from it a most picturesque view of the' harbor, town, and 1 the back country can be obtained. 'An excel- j lout programme of tporta has been drawn up/ 1

and yesterday men were engaged pegging off the running track, orecting marquees, &c. The children aro to assemblo at tho school church at 11 o'clock this morning, and after a short address by tho Ven. Archdeacon Harper they will march in procession, headed by tho Garrison Band, to the ground. Up to the limo of our going to press this morning tho weather showed every signs of proving farorable, so no doubt a most enjoyable day will be spent j especially by young folk. We might mention for the benefit of the publio that the safest and most plensnnt way to get to the grounds will be by following the main road till reaching the residence of Mr "Win. Rutherford, and then turning down the side road adjacent. The Board of Education forwardod an abstract of the sohool fund accounts for tho year ending 31st December, to be filled up and returned.
