(By Telegbafh.) .Auckland, .Tan. 8. An extraordinary meeting of shareholders m the New Zealand Smelting Company, Limited, was held at noon to-day m a room tD the Chamber of Commerce. As the pro* ceedings were of a private nature the fress representatives were not pormitted to attend. The Hon. Minister of Public Works to-day visited tlio Onehunga works now manufacturing iron. A meeting of the United Charitable Aid Board was held to-day, whon a resolution fixing the rate at one-fifteenth of a penny m the pound was rescinded and the following resolution carried :— " That full information as to the requirements of the Board of Charitable Aid be sent to government, and that they be informed the Board will be ready to proceed on receiving from tlio Government an indemnity and a supply of necessary funds for charitable aid." It has been decided that the Roard's \?g*\ powers under the Act are sufficient to onforce payment of the respectiTe contributions. Wellington, Jan. B. Mr Ebenezer Fox, who for many years hw heen Secretary to the Executive Council, died this morning from what is termed creeping paralysis. Mr Fox had been failing for the last eighteen months. Latterly he had been on leave of absence, but the change had little effect. Gradually ho wus losing power of bands and legs, and yesterday he was removed from the Wellington Club to the Hospital, where he expired at six o'clock this morning, aged 69. It has been decided to entertain Admiral Trron and the officers of the Nelson at a bull, and the crew at a picnic. She is expected to arrive on Monday. The charge against Edward Shaw for misappropriating n cheque was called on again at the Resident Magistrate's Court this afternoon, when it was dismissed on the grounds that there was no specific instructions as to what was to be done with the cheque. He throw stones at them, and then rushed away for his gun, which ho fired, wounding Waldie iv tho neck with a bullet. Accused's solicitor stated that prisoner bad been annoyed for some time by people calling him " Uncle Ben," and that he only fired tho gun with tho intention of frighteniug them. He was committed for trial. Bail was allowed, himself m £50 and two sureties of £50 each.
