TIMARU BOATING CLUB.

The Timaru Boating Club opened- tho bottling season 1883-86 on Saturday afternoon. Shortly after 2 o'clock tho members began to assemble at the boating ihed, oror which proudly floated m the easterly breeze Great Brituin's national flag, and at 230 p.m. a. general meeting of the Olub took place, at whi<ih the motiou given Dotico of at the

annual meeting *a> agreed to. Active preparations then took place for the procession, the arrangements for which, thanks to the I'ommittee's effort*, were found to be as near perfection as possible. Mr .J;B. S. Jackson acted as Marshal, and after «11 -tnelbpats had been smartly launched from 'tibo ways, he arranged the procession m ue following order :-~: ■' . ■< ■ WArpi. R. Vtpkat, Captain, stroke ; E.;H. Camp'bell, bQtr'i S.^iMoo^cox;. ; - : '.. ' '':.;■• ,''l^ Waiho. -■ • j, W. jAWooff, . Btroke ; J. Hughe*, bow ; :Shrimpt6fl, cox. '■ i ■' ■.)" ■ .'■ V Otaio. " "" " . McNab, aWoke t - Goocb; 3; Hennah, 2; McLean, bow j Munro, cqx. Otipt/a. F. Cameron, Deputy-Captain, stroke ; R. Peters, 3 ; F. W. Wake, 2 ; Laiog, bow ; J. Wilson, col. In' the leading boat the crew pulled double sculls, nnd m the next pair-oar pulling was shown. This way of arranging the boats proved Tery effective. Ab soon as the boats were m line, the word was given and away they went at a nice even Btroko round the stern of the p.s. Titan, across the bows and circling the schooner .Sovereign at tlio outer buoys and the • second row of buoys off the Breakwater,- the boat* proceeded on till the leading one was abreast the watermen's stops, when, to use a military phrase they formed riiiht about, and thus oamo up broadside and broadside. The Captain then rose, gavo Ihc command " peak oare," which was dono m very good time, declared the season INBS-86 open, wished the Club every success, and called for three cheers; which were most heartily given. The form displayed during the pr"eession was fair, the " crews being matched very evenly, and the coxswains doing their work capitally. The boats, which havo just been thoroughly overhauled, varniahed and painted by Mr Murley, boatbuilder, looked handsomer than ever, and the waler was just lively enough to make rowing enjoyable. The afternoon being a beautiful one a very large number of spectators assembled at the boat-shed and on the wharf, and took the liveliest interest m the proceedings. The p.s. Titan was gaily decorated with bunting, and. the Club's colors also being out, the display lent much animation to the sc-ne. The Club desire to heartily thank Captain Webster, the harbor master, for the loan of flags, etc. After the procession had broken up the Bcratch races were got off. For these Mr Jackson kindly acted as starter and judge, and it is needless to add that m snch experienced hands the duties were done full justice to. Tho first crews to meet were stroked by W. J. Wood and F. Cameron respectively. The course was from the end of the Moody wharf, round the wreck buoy; outside the outer mooring buoys and to the watermen's steps. The boats were sent away well, Woods' crew being the first to get hold of the water properly. They soon, however, got astray, and on reaching tho wreck buoy Cameron's crew had a lead of a couple of lengths. From that out the race was never m doubt. Macksy next met Turnbull, but the letter's crew being a very " scratch " one, had a very poor chance, and were never m it from the start, Mackay's crew winning easily by three lengths. The concluding heat was expected to be a closely contested one, but to the surprise of nearly everybody Mockay, after a couple of lengths had been rowed drew away, turned the wreck buoy with s length to the good, and won very comfortably by over two lengths, the crew m the other boat from the bow down to the stroke showing quite a marked contrast to their first form. This race brought to a close a very enjoyable afternoon's sport ; one it is trusted the public will often see repeated during the season. The heate resulted as under : — FIBST HBAT. OTrpr/A— F.
