THE BOROUGH LIGHTING.

TO TUB EDITOR OF THE TIMARU HERALD. Sib, — It appears to be the intention of our Borough Council to adopt kerosono instead of gas, for street lighting, because kerosene is cheaper. Ou the same principle, why did they «top at kerosene? Would not slush lamps or tar barrels have been cheaper than kerosene, or cheapest of nil, why did they not abolish street lighting altogether? 1 think tho mere threat of this retrogado movement is deeply to be regretted. I havo not heard any very grcvious complaints from tho ratepayers about tho cost of gas, and I am sure the movement has not their sympathy, but if carried out will be severely condemned. The borough rates of Timnru are light compared with othor towns, such for instauco as Oamaru, aud I havo not heard thut our Gas Company is charging moru than other Gas Companies under similar circumstances. I am neithor a shareholder m tho Go* Company, nor am I a Borough Councillor, but I am 'a ratepayer, aud I firmly bclievo that if a poll of tho ratepayers, wore taken, a strong majority would protest by their votes against throwing our enterprising town buck to tho darker ages, by the introduction of kerosene street lighting. I eurnostly hopo our Councillors will reconsider this matter, and arrive at a fair settlement of their difficulty with the Qm Company. I urn/do. Pbog&jus.
