POLITICAL NEWS.

(By Tklegkapii.) (from our owk correspondent.) Wellington, Sept. 16. Correspondence was tabled to-night respecting tho San Francisco service. It includes telegrams up to to-day's dato. So far the New South Wales Government show littlo inclination to join New Zealand m the service. The Union Company demand considerably modified terms, and Mr Pearce makes somewhat similar stipulations. At the last moment Dr Logan Campbell, representing the presont contractors (the Pacific Mail Company) demands to be allowed timo to tender, but Sir Julius Yogel does not encourage tlie idea. Tho matter will probably come before the House tomorrow. It is unlikely further concessions will be agreed to. 1 learn on authority that tho Government do not intend to pay the slightest attention to Admiral Scott's criticism and proposals, which they entirely disagree with. They will adhere to "their previous projects, and will put the four chief port 3m a state of defence. I hear the Governor fully approves of this determination. The beginning of the end was visible m tho House this afternoon. The Premier stated that the Government would proceed with tho District Railways Bill, the Special Powers and Contract Bill, tho Waimea Plains Railway Bill, the Railway Authorisation Bill, tho Property Tax Bill and the Appropriation Bill, and that other measures on tho Order Paper would bo dropped. Tho Bills on tho Order Paper to be discharged nro the Criminal Code Bill, tho Railway Commissioners Bill, the Magistrates Court Bill, tho Prisons Prohibition Bill, and tho Divorco and tho Matrimonial Causes Act Amendmont Bill. There are other Bills of course now passing through Committee, such as tho Land Bill, that have yot to ho dealt with. Tho Land Bill will probably bo down on Friday noxt. Tho Premier further stated that ho hoped all necessary business would bo got through, so thut Parliament might prorogue this week. Although there is littlo on tho Ordor Paper it is very much doubted if tho prorogation ceremony can tako place boforo Monday or Tuesday, though all the real business may bo got through by Saturday. Of course it is quito possible that business may bo so far advanced as to admit of the prorogation on Saturday, but it is quito iniposaible, oven at this stage of tho session, to announce any particular day with certainty. Some members, however, aro moro sanguine, and are already getting together their belongings m tho hopo of getting away on Saturday. Au effort ia being made to induco tho Union Company's usual Mondny steamer to lcavo hero a day m advanco for the South. Major Atkinson has given notico to move that a sum of £2000 bo placed on the Supplementary Estimates ns a grant to Sir W. Fox for servicos rendered to the colony as West Coast Commissioner. It will bo remembered that m IHBO Sir Dillon 801 l and Sir William Fox woro appointed Commissioners to aettlo certain land disputes with tho Maoris on the West Coast of tho North Island. Sir F. I). 8011, howover, subsequently accepted the Agent-Generalship and Sir W. Fox was left to porform the work singlehanded, excepting m so far as Mr Ernest Bell, Secretary to tho Commission, was able to nssist him. Aftor tho work had beou satisfactorily completed tho Government offered Sir W\ Fox a sum of £2000 but this was refused by him, and he Btatod that his servicos had boon givon as a labor of loyc. It is now rumorod that Sir William Fox has suffered revorscs of fortune, and that a money grant, to which he is clearly ontitlod and which many pc-oplo erroneously suppose has long Binco beon puid, would bo a wolcouio to this Templar Knight, and Major Atkinson, as a moinbor of tho Government und«r whoso authority Sir W. Fox acted during his torm of sorvico as West Coast Commissioner, has theroforo placed his motion on tho Ordor Papor. It is understood tho Govornmont will cordially oupport the mobitfn.
