TIMARU HOUND SHOW.

Committeo — Messrs F. J. Kimbell, J. S. Rutherford, W. S. Armitagc, M. Stitt, G. B. Stalky, and F. W. Pctro. Judges : for Harriers and Beagles — Messrs F. Cotton and T. Hardcastlo ; for Fox Torricrs— Mr M. J. Godby. Class Stewards, for Hounds — Mr A. St. G. Hamersloy ; for Fox Terriers— -Mr H. Ford. Tho gontlemon who originnted tho first hound show held m New Zealand havo no reason to compluin of tho result so far as tho number and quality of tho exhibits wero concerned, though they looked forward to a better atteudanec of tho gonoral public. But tho thin edge of the wedgo has now been inserted, and, it is to bo hoped, increased intorest awakonod to tho breeding and acquisition of first-class dogs, not only of tho hound class, but of othor really useful descriptions. The total nnraber of entries was 39, including 13 m tho harriors, 7 m beagles, and 19 m fox torricrs. Tho bliow was held m Messrs Mucloan and Stewart's Repository, kindly lent for tho occasion. Messrs Macpherson, Filuier and Co. also supplied tho timber gratis. Tho officers worked hard from first to lust to mako tho show a success, and we have to thank them, and especially tho Hon. Secrotary, Mr W. Bt. Lindsay, for tho assistance thoy accorded üb. Tho exhibits did not scorn to relish their position or one another's companies very much, judging by tho amount of yolping and " tongue " they indulged m, tho noiso at timos being almost deafening. Tho music, liowovcr, feel very swoctly on tho oars of thoso who could appreciate thoir bark as well as their appearance. Tho dogs woro placed on platforms running round throo sides of tho Repository, and liod by chains to rapes fastened to tho walls. In Class 1 (Harriers), for tho best stallion hound, there were six entries, all being a fair lot. Tho first prizo was awarded to Resolute, from tho Brnckenfield pack, a beautiful hound, combining bone, symmetry and qnnlity, and ono that could noL fail to get good stock howorcr mated. Hattlor, of Christchurch, pleased tho judges noxt. Ho was a really nico littlo hound nnd also full of quality, but wanted Bosoluto'e bono and was inclined to be «nipoy about thonost. Wolde-

man, entered by the Waimate County Harrier Club, wob highly commended, but though of a good stomp suffered through age m the company of younger rivals. In Class 2 (also harriers}, for the best couple of brood bitches, Rapid and Vixen (Waiinate^ took first honorß. A handsomo pair — showing length, liberty, and plenty of room— they were deservedly admired. Tempest and Riot, the second prize takers, were nico Borty bitches, but lacked Beveral qualities possessed by tho winners. For the best two couples of working hounds m harriers thore were four entries, the Brackonfield, South Canterbury, Waimato County and Christchurch, packs being represented. Virgin, Victory, Whimper and Wishful, of the S.C, wore declared the favorites. Thoy were a nice even lot, with capital legs and feot. The second prize-takera came from Waimato, and wero good useful wear and tear hounds. Among tho working hounds shown by the Christchurch Master was a very pretty bitch, ] Dairymaid, and had her mates been equally ! good the two couples could hardly have suffered defeat at any show m the ; world. The BrackenOeld entries showed many good points, but as a whole were hardly fit for the company they were m. In Beagles, as we have already mentioned, there wero soven entries. In class 4, for the best stallion hound, Pelican, the winner, was much superior to his rivals, his best points being a first-class head and plenty of timber. Medler was a nico colored hound, but did not show as much length and liberty as Pelican, while m Verger BCveral features were wanting. Class 5 (Beagles) comprised four entrieß lof single couples of working bounds. Painter j and Matchless of Geraldine were beautifully ] colored, and for beagles wonderfully straight !in the forelegs. The Ashwick exhibits, which received second notice, were a ueeful-looking pair, but not so sorty or well marked as the winners. A nice couple of beagles were shown from Dunedin, but were rather too largo. The rest of the show was devoted to fox terriers, which mustered well, and as a wholewould have proved a credit to a much larger centre of population. The Judge had no little difficulty m making hi 3 decisions. In Class 6, for tho best dog, he awarded the palm to Colonel Bailey's Simla Jock, who was slightly hotter mado m the hind quarters than Belvoir Tom, who secured second honors. Bencher was highly commended. He was a handsome littlo fellow m front, but rather Black about the loins. As regards the others they were all more or less fancied. In terrier bilclics Colonel Bailey was again to the fore, carrying off first and second prizes with Nettle and Vie respectively. The former was as handsome a bitch as could be desired, but the latter was v bit too short m the head. Spot and Wasp wero tho next fancied. The prizes woro : Forthebest stallion harrier a massive silver salver ; for tho best couple of brood bitches (harriers) a pair of rusticated oak silver mounted beakers ; for the best couplo of working hounds, a silver butter cooler of unique design and very beautiful workmanship ; for the best stallion beagle, a pair of silver-mounted plain oak beakers, slightly smaller m 6ize compared with the ones mentioned abovo, but equally as tastefully finished ; for the best couple of working beagles, a massive silver tankard, with ebony handle ; for the best fox terrier bitch a silver pocket Uask, with patent hinged stopper and concave side which allows of its fitting the breast much better than do flasks of ordinary design. In addition to these prizes iB ono presented by Mr M. J. Godby, consisting of a large silver beaker, with a brace of hounds engraved m relief on it, which fell to Colonel Bailey's Simla Jock.
