ADELAIDE MARKETS.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited), report of the Adelaide markets under date August 20th as follows : — WHEAT. Great quietness with an almost entire want of demand has characterised the market during the past week. In the absence of any large transactions it is somewhat diffionlt to fix values, holders showing no disposition to quit stocks. We quoto shipping parcels 3s lOd to 3s lid per bushel (buyers) j 4s to 4s Id per bushel (sellers) at Port Adelaide, and Id to Vid less at outports. OATS. (Duty 3d.) — There was some little speculation early m the week, m anticipation of the Treasurer's Bndget Speech, and we placed a lino of 8000 bushels, delivered at our store doors, Port Adelaide, at about 2a 5Jd, bags extra. A quieter feeling was manifested immediately it was known that the proposed duty was only 3d per bushel, it t>eing generally thought that a higher rate than this would have been fixed.- Our Invercargill house telegraphed yesterday a firm market at Is 9Jd to Is lOd per bnshel for short bright feed oats. The market hero closes quiet, bnt steady, at 2s 5d to 2s Cd per bushel. BARLET. (Duty Bd.) — Brewers have made their season's purchases, otherwise the proposed dnty of 9d would have affected our market very considerably, especially as it is intended to tax imported malt 2s per bushel. Quotations are nominally 4s 3d to 4s 6d per bushel for prime malting sorts. BUTTER. (Formerly free, dnty now 2d por lb.)— Prices are nncha New Zealand potted is worth lid to Is per lb ; fresh Is 2d to Is 4d. CHEESE.
