GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
(By Telegraph.) Wellington, July 30. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. THE CHEISTCHTTBCn HOSPITAL. With TC3pect to a motion of which Col. Brett had given notice relating to the Christchurch Hospital, the Hon. the Colonial Secretary stated that he had received a letter from Dr Stewart announcing he had commenced an action for libel against the Wellington Evening Press, and he therefore asked Colonel Brett not to proceed with the motion. Colonel Brett said he wished to read a paper that had been laid on tho tablo m reference to the case. Captain Fraser pointed out that if it was read it would be printed m Hansard, and tho Council had already decided papers should not be printed. The Speaker held that Colonel Brett cculd read papers if he liked. Captain Fraser drew attention to the presence of stntDgers. The question that strangers be requested to withdraw was negatived by 22 to 19. Colonel Brett thea read the papers m question which made serious charges m connection with the administration of the Christchurch Hospital. After & short discussion, Mr McLean moved the previous question. On the question being put — " That this question be now put," it was answered m the negative, and thus the matter was settled. SECOND IBADING. The Public Works Bill was read a second tim*. IN COMMITTEE. The Land Transfer Bill was committed and progress was reported, the Council adjourning at 4.45 p.m.
