STRANDING OF THE S.S. INO

Oar (Otwjo Daily Tinic-i) Fortrose correspondent writes :—" A messenger arrived here on Saturday from Waikawa with the intelligence that the s.s. Ino had run ashore there on tho beach at high water at abont fonr o'clock that morning. He reported that all hands were aafe, and the cargo was being landed, bnt that it was doubtful whether the vessel wonld be got off again. On Monday evening one of the Ino' 3 shareholders returned from, tho scene of the mishap, and gives the following particulars : The Ino went ashore during a dense fog m the mate's watch. It appears to have been a providential escape, aa a reef inside of which she laid runs parallel with the shore. Had she struck npon it sho would undoubtedly have been wrecked, and probably human life wonld havo been lost. Captain Lyders had little hopea at firat of getting the craft afloat again, but he obtained a dray and pnt an anchor on it, and succeeded m getting to a favorable place for putting it on board a boat. By placing it to seaward of the vessel, discharging a portion of the cargo, and tho tide suiting, eteam was got op, and gradually pressure wa3 brought to bear on tho anchor, the result being a steady working into deep water. Tho only apparent damage was found to be the loss of the rudder. This difficulty was overcome by extracting the rudder of the Eliza McPhee (which vessel was lost there some time Bince) ont of the sand, and upon examination it was found to be sound, and very nearly the identical size required ; so near, indeed, that it can bo utilised for bringing the vessel on to Fortrose (whither she was bound when the accident happened), when it will bo mado a perfectly secure appendage."
