(By Teiegraph.) Attokiahd, June 1. John Nairn, aged 70, an inmate of the Old Men's Kefuge, cut his throat with a tableknife yesterday, and died at the Hospital this afternoon. Thunderbolt is to be shipped to Melbourne to take part m the Cup and Derby. It is rumored that he has been purchased by Mr H. P. Lance for £2000. Ha-weba, June 1. A man named Eiehard Faville was arrested on Saturday night on a charge of arson at Oeo. Faville had been turned out of an hotel for being drunk and disorderly, and soon after the occupants of the house had gone to bed a large box containing some inflammable material was found to be burning close to the outside wall of the house (a wooden one). Faville was discovered crouching behind a fence near the hotel. He was brought up at Manaia this morning and remanded. Nafieb, June 1. The horse Director, who is first favorite for the Auckland Steeplechase, returned to Hastings on Saturday, and is considered an unlikely starter. Wellington, June 1. Major Cautley will hand over charge of the defence works to Major Badham on the 10th inst., and will shortly afterwards proceed Home. In consequence of the pacific nature of the cables from Home m connection with the BussoAfghan difficulty the expenditure on defences will be largely reduced. In the appeal case of Searle v. the New Zealand Insurance Company, judgment was given to-day practically m favor of the plaintiff. Government have decided to grant a passage by steamer to a delegate of the Napier Chamber of Commerce, who is proceeding to Samoa to report on the requirements as to trade with Samoa and other neighboring islands. Sir Julius Yogel is also communicating with the" Chambers ,at Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington offering similar concessions. In each case the offer is conditional that the reports of the delegates are not to be considered of a confidential nature, and must be published on their return. Government have received a communication from the Cable Company, asking them jointly with New South Wales to continue the subsidy to the cable between Australia and New Zealand for a further period of ten years. The New Zealand Government have expressed a strong inclination to discontinue the subsidy, and as the line is now finished, those using it should be made to pay. They are, however, m communication with the Sydney Government on the question. William Davis Mullitch, arrested on suspicion of being concorned m the jewellery robbery, was brought up this morning charged with receiving a watch, knowing the same to have been stolen. The case was remanded until the 4th inst. The Victorian Government have asked the Government of New Zealand to reduce the charge on cables along the New Zealand land lines to 6d per ten words, but the Commissioner of Telegraphs has declined to accede to the request. CKBiSTCHtrBCH, June 1. The Custom revenue received at Christ - ohurch during May amounted to £13,609. The same month of last year was £13,407. The beer duty amounted to £869 ; May, 1884, £875. A woman named Johanna Moore, was committed for trial to-day under a charge of larceny, the circumstances of which are peculiar. It appears that two ladies were at the Christchurcn railway station last Saturday, and went to a private apartment m which one of them left her purse containing over £20. The accused entered the apartment just after, and pocketed the purse. She did not give information to the police or the railway officials, but hurried away m company with a friend. The lady having missed her purse and remembered where she left it, suspicion was directed to the woman Moore, who was called back by a constable. She did not then tell him of her find, and it was only when directly asked if she had found any money that blio produced the missing purse. Mr Beetham, R.M., considered the case to be just on the borderland between larceny and no larceny and left it for a jury to determine whether there was any intention to steal. Dunbdin, June 1. A six-roomed house m Union street, occupied by A. Maggitt, and owned by A. J. O. Baber, was burned down this morning. The furniture was insured m the Victoria office for £150, and the building m the Norwich Union for £350. Some clothes which had been placed before the kitchen fire to dry ignited. The City Licensing Committee to-day refused all applications for midnight licenses. Tho principal hotels got eleven o'clock licenses and the others ten o'clock licenses. At the inquest on Stanley, who fell through the skylight at the City Hotel, a verdict of "accidental death"- was returned, with & recommendation that a clause be inserted m the City Building Regulations that iron bars, at sufficient distance, be placed m buildings to prevent anyone from falling through. At the City Council the question of reorganising the Fire Brigade was considered m committee. It was decided to make the Brigade a paid one, and have a superintendent, two branchmen, and 16 paid members. The Council have yet to affirm this, however. At the inquest held on Donald Sinclair, who died from injuries received by a fall on board the Te Anau on the 20th May, a verdict of " Accidental Death " was returned. The Chamber of Commerce have decided to accept the offer of the Government to send a delegate from the Chamber by the Jessie | Nicoll to the South Sea Islands. j Messrs Dowsey, Philip, and Gourley, the handicappers, have forwarded their resignations to the D.J.C. narrow escape from being killed on the Winton line this morning. The train had pulled up to embark a family, and while they were on the carriage platform a sudden jerk threw the child off between the carriage and the van, but the guard with commendable alacrity managed to pick it up before the van wheel reached him.
