Boating Club. — A Committee meeting of the Timaru Boating Club was held yesterday afternoon, at which some routine business was transacted and some accounts passed for payment. Summons Cases. — Eight summons cases are Bet down for hearing at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning. They include cattle and horses at large, and vehicles unattended m the street, and will all come under the Borough Bye-laws. Depasture of Me Goodall. — A number of Mr and Mrs GoodaU's friends assembled at tho railway station yesterday to bid them good-bye on their departure for Napier. Ab the train moved off they were saluted with a round of hearty cheers. Omission. — In our report of the presentation to Mr Goodoll, which appeared m yesterday's issue, we omitted to mention that tho piece of plate had been obtained from Messrs Bower and Ferguson, of this town. We may also add that tho inscription, as a work of art, could not have been excelled. Special Tbain. — A special train consisting of an engine, three carriages and a breakvan arrived at Timaru from Lyttelton and Christchurch at 4.20 p.m. yesterday, and after a stay of about a couple of minutes proceeded on to Dunedin. It contained somo 56 lunatics from the Napier and Christchurch Asylums, who are being transferred to that at Seacliffe, near Dunedin. Mr Jones, tho Station Master, with characteristic thoughtfulness, had the train shunted on to a line m the yard somo distance from tho platform, so that its inmates were to a great extent beyond public gaze. The lunatics were very quiet looking m appearance and manner. Local Industry at Chbistchubch.— The Christchurch Star of a recent date contains an interesting account of ijhe works of Messrs Clarke, Dacombe and Co:; biscuit makers and wholesale confectioners, Colombo street, Christchurch. In the biscuit factory the flour is kneaded by machinery, so that it is not touched by any of the operators. The confectionery department contains features not to bo found m any other factory m the colony. For instance, one of the partners has invented a syttem of pearling comfits which has won the approbation of a representative of a well-known English firm, and he is negotiating for tho right to use the patent at Home. The firm were the first to manufacture " Scotch mixtures "m Christchurch, and among other goods, thoy turn out no fewer than sixty different kinds of medicated lozenges. The firm has only recently been started, but promises to make a name for itself m the colony. Bobouoh Council. — A statutory meeting of the Timaru Borough Council was held at 3.30 p.m. yesterday. There wore present His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Hill, Sutter, Gabites, Bowor, Sherratt and Bush. Councillor Hill apologised for Councillor Massey, who was too ill to attend the meeting. The Town Clerk explained that the meeting had been called for the purpose of allowing Councillors to sign the Burgess roll. No objections had baen sent m, tho only correspondence to |be dealt with being from Mr James Bruce, who requested the Council to place his name on the roll m respect of section No. 22, Government Town, as he was willing to be rated for it. This was done, and a formal resolution that the Burgess roll be signed was then passed. The Town Clerk said there were about 160 de«i faulters this year. This number, Councillor Sutter said, was the lowest he had known for years. This being all tho business tho meeting'terminated. Coubsing.— At a meeting of coursers held last evening m the long room of the Grosvenor Hotel, sevoral representatives from a long distance expressed their views as to the desirability of holding a grand champion open meeting m South Canterbury m June next, under tho auspices of the South Canterbury Club. It was proposed and carried that a 32 dog stake of £10 10s each be run, and be open to all comers. Great interest
