The Wool BBABON.— The number of bales of wool received by rail at Timaru up to the 25th instant was 19,466, and by road 3497, making a grand total of 22,963. BoEOtJGH Council. — An ordinary meeting of this Council was held last evening at which a good deal of business was transacted. Spme important notices of motion have been given for future meetings. Thb O Battbbt.— We learn thaj; the ranks of the C Battery of Artillery hare been very much added to of late, many of the right stamp of young men having joined this old-established corps. The roll muster is now between ninety and one hundred, and still fresh applicants daily make their appearance. Deedgiho. — Captain Webster, the Harbor Master, had his " scoop " dredger at work yesterday opposite the new wharf. This mode of dredging appears to be very tedious and somewhat slow, but the results are deemed quite satisfactory. Judging from the " lifts," the deposit of silt at the place mentioned is not of much extent. Pbbsentation to Mb Goodall. — We would remind subscribers that the presentation to Mr Goodall, Engineer to the Timaru Harbor works,. takes place at the Grosvenor Hotel at 4 o'clock sharp this afternoon. Mr Goodall, we understand, proceeds to Napier to-morrow. . Though taking up his abode there, he will of course /visit Timaru regularly to see how our harbor works, which will still be under his control, are being carried out. Faiblib Cbbek School CosntiTTßß. — A meeting of this Committee was held' on the. 25th instant, all the members being present.' The Master's report was read, showing the average attendance of pupils for this month to be : Boys, 25.7; girls, 28.8; total, 54 ; highest attendance on any day, 60 ; roll number— boys, 30 ; girls, 38 ; total, 68. The Visitor reported having obtained the necessary step-ladders for the use of the school ; also that a new lock was required on the cod. house. An account for school cleaning was passed for payment— '£2 7s. Mr Wilson was appointed Visitor for, the ensuing month, after which the meeting adjourned. The programme drawn out is as follows: — "Boyal Musketeers" (fantasia), Liebe's " Harz " (polka), "The Village Blacksmith" (euphonium solo), "Hyacinth" (waltz), "Gems of Ireland" (selection), " Grand Danish March," V Sparkling Shells " (waltz), "La Passerelle " (fantasia), "Conquest" (galop), "God Save the Queen." Should the evening be fine the concert ought to prove very enjoyable. BIFLB Volttntbebs. — The first drill of the newly formed Timaru Bine Volunteers was held last evening m Messrs Jonas and Bourn's horse repository (kindly lent to the Volunteers), sucty-sir members duly answering to their names. Captain Whit© and Lieutenant Bhodes were m attendance. The men were put through their facings by four members of the Company, the drill lasting altogether about an hour, and as a first essay was verycreditable. Seen .together the men looked well, being nearly all matched as to height, and all, without exception, of fine physique. Taken altogether, the . first drill was very satisfactory indeed, and augurs well for the future success -of the corps. Besidhnt Maqistbatb's Cottbt. Gbbax,sine. — At this Court on Monday, before H. C. Baddeley, Esq., R.M., the following civil cases were neard :— Dr Fish v. H. P. Jones, claim £3 10s. Judgment , by default with coats. (Dr Fish, J.P., here took his seat on the Bench.) W. Postlethwaite v. Jno. Burke, claim £8 12s 3d j judgment summons. Mr White appeared for the judgment creditor, and Dr Foster for tho judgment debtor. The case occupied a long time, The dofondant hod paid a composition of 7d m the £ to one J. Y. Ward, acting as his (Burkes) agent, and also agent for Postlcthwaito. The Bench finally decided not to regard the composition, as the matter should have been under deed, and therefore ordered defendant to pay one-half the amount of claim and costs within 14 days, and the balance m one month from date; m default of either payment to be imprisoned m H.M. Gaol, Timaru, for the space of three weeks, and the whole money to become due. This being all thebusinesi, the Court adjourned.
