WRECK OF A GERMAN BARQUE.
Christchurch, April 20. The bi'igantine Omaha, which arrrived from tho Chatham Islands yesterday evening, brought as passengers Captain A. Classen and nino seamen, of the Hambnrg owned barque Plyaden, which was wrecked on Wangaroa Island. The Plyaden sailed from Levuka on Jan. 29th, bound for Falmouth for orders, with a cargo of copra. The vessel sprang aleak m a gale m the middle of February, and finding it impossible to keep down the water m the hold, tho captain made for tho Chathatns,. intending to beach the vessel. He was foiled? m his endeavor by a. sunken rock near Mataraki Point, on which tho barquo struck and became a total wreck. Tho wreck realised i!4O at anction. An enquiry was held, and the captain and officers wore exonerated from all blamo. Thoy were seven week 3on the island before an opportunity occurred for getting away. Captain Classen expresses his obligations to Mr Ritchie for his valuablo assistance m saving 1 the crew, also to Mr Hood and Captain Meekleham (of the Omaha). Captain Classen came through to Christchurch to consult with the German Consul. Tho crow ar'a m tho Lyttelton Sailors' Homo.
