While the Ruapehn was being brought up to tho wharf to-day, Pilot Sims, who was m charge, hngged the shore too close, with the result that the steamer grounded close to the Te Aro baths. The Ruapehu remained fast all the afternoon, and towards the evening the freezing hulk was taken alongside, and a portion of her cargo, consisting of 1000 carcaasea is to be taken out of her forehold. It is fully expected the steamer will be floated off successfully when the tide makoa between midnight and 1 o'clock. She is not likely to have sustained any damage asthero is aaundy bottom, but divers have been sent down to examine her hull. Tho Hinomoa has been ordered to render what assistance she can. An official enquiry will bo held into the circumstances. Later. The preliminary enquiry into the grounding 1 of the Ruapehu was held this afternoon. The pilot m his evidence admitted that all his orders were promptly carried out, and that he hugged the shore a little too close, and that he alone was to blame m the matter.
