CORRESPONDENCE.

SOUTH CANTERBURY AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMAKU HEBALD. Sib,— -As the half-annual general meeting of the above club will be held m a day or two I pen a few words to call attention to some matters which require looking into. The system hitherto pursued of handicap 1 ping the club races has been very irregular The previous timed performances of competitors, and their places at the finish of race; have not been carefully taken into consider ation. This, I think, is the only gauge bj •which a successful handicap can be made To enable the handicappera to do themselves aud the competitors justice (which under the present system they cannot) I would suggest that the entries for all handicap races shoulc be. lodged with the secretary, at least a week before the sports are held, the handicaps to be declared as soon after as possible. I thinli all the races on the second day should be handicapped, including tho mile. The 120 ya?da hurdles, to be run on the first day, anc S 100 yards flat race handicap substituted this would give junior members more interest m the sports and a greater chance to seoure a Prize. The whole sports programme require! remodelling on the lines of either that of th< Dunedin or' Christchurch Amateur Athletic dubs. 1 1 shall be quite satisfied if my .re mark's ball forth some discussion, as the fault: must.ta remedied sooner or later, and whj fiob*fcone*? ' ' I am, etc., - ■ - ■ Athusts. Ji»»ru, lOfcb. April, *j,gs
